John Lester Newell, 71, of 715 47th St. S., a retired Marine and Army veteran, died of cancer Friday at a local hospital.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Croxford Funeral Home and Crematory. A memorial service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with burial of ashes with military honors approximately 2 p.m. Thursday at Fort Harrison Veterans Cemetery.
John is survived by his wife, Doris Newell of Great Falls; his stepsons, Bob Michaelson of Great Falls and Ron (Nancy) Michaelson of Vaughn; a stepdaughter, Susie (Andrew) Workman of Oregon, stepsons Wesley (Staci) Workman of Great Falls, Tommy Workman of Seattle, and Casey Workman of Texas; his grandchildren, Heather, Jamie, Sarah, Kelsey, Chris, Rachel, Christopher, Nick, Victoria, Adrian, Alex and Cade; and 12 great-grandchildren. His beloved dog, Susie Q, also survives him.
John was born Feb. 28, 1938, in Sioux Falls, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Sioux Falls, and attended Sioux Falls High School. He married Doris (Brady) Michaelson, on July 20, 1991.
He served in the U.S. Marines for six years and in the U.S. Army for 34 years, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant. His time in the military took him around the world to a lot of places including Korea, Vietnam and Germany.
He was an active member of the VFW Post 1087. The VFW Post was a very important part of his life. He also participated in the Spay and Neuter clinics.
John loved history, fishing, boating and reading.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lena Newell; his siblings, Ellen, Annabell, Margie, James and Betty; three stepchildren, Belinda, Doris Ann and Rodney; and his cherished dachshund, Molly.
