FORT BENTON Robert Kenneth Doerk Jr., 78, of Fort Benton, died of natural causes Dec. 20, at a local health care facility.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Croxford Funeral Home & Crematory. To honor Bob's wishes, there will not be a memorial service. Instead, to recognize the many incredible ways Bob touched the lives of so many, please join us in celebrating and honoring Bob with an informal tribute to his life after 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at the Wake Cup coffee house in Fort Benton, 1714 Front Street C. The celebration is an open house, please feel free to drop in any time.

Bob was born May 26, 1940, in Chicago, Ill. Growing up in the Midwest, he graduated from Madison West High School in 1958 and Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis., in 1962 and was commissioned an Air Force officer on graduation day. He spent 20 years in the Air Force with assignments in Ohio, the Pentagon, Vietnam, Illinois, England and Montana. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam. On July 2, 1966, Bob married the love of his life, Mary Dudley.

Retiring from the Air Force on Thursday, Sept. 30, 1982, he began his second career on Friday, Oct. 1, 1982, in a bank trust department. He retired in Cheyenne, Wyo., on Nov. 30, 1999, as vice president/office manager of the Trust Department for Wells Fargo Bank (previously Norwest) in Cheyenne.

After living in Great Falls from 1977 to 1995, he retired in Fort Benton, just 37 miles down the road. There Bob stayed as active in retirement as he had while living in Great Falls with community/historical involvement. Among the activities he was engaged in over the past years included: president, Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation; vice president, Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center Fund Inc.; Portage Route Chapter, LGTHF Inc.; portrayed Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Dawson (factor at old Fort Benton) for public events; vice chairman, C.M. Russell Museum Board of Directors; president, Great Falls Jockey Club; chairman, Great Falls Public Library Board of Directors; co-founder/co-leader, Great Books Discussion Group; program director, Great Falls Kiwanis Club; instructor for numerous Elderhostel presentations, tour guide and presenter for a variety of historical subjects; chairman, National Fur Trade Symposium held in Fort Benton; member of the River and Plains Society Board of Directors and member of the Fort Restoration Committee; and president, Fort Benton Community Improvement Association.

Bob is survived by his lovely wife and best friend of 47 years, Mary (Dudley) Doerk of Fort Benton; brother, Tom Doerk of La Veta, Colo., and son, Steve and his wife, Deanna (Powell) Doerk of Vancouver, Wash.; he is also survived by his four grandchildren, Nicholas Doerk (20), Rhaeley Shaffer (18), Jylian Doerk (12) and Zackery Doerk (11).

Bob was preceded in death by his parents in 2002; and his younger sister, Janice early in 2012.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Dedman Foundation in Fort Benton or the organization of your choice.

What a great man! I worked for him at Malmstrom AFB, MT, in the 70's, and I still think of him often. Brilliant man with a love of history that sparked a life-long passion of my own. His combination of professionalism and dry wit were priceless. I still miss him!

I had the honor of working for Major Doerk at Malmstrom AFB in the mid '70's. The lessons learned from him carried me throughout a successful business career. In just a few short years he made a life long impression on me. I have greatly respected him ever since and his candle will never burn out. Simply put, Bob Doerk was a great man.

Mary & Steve-
So sorry to hear of Bob's passing. Bob was a great friend and mentor to me early in my career with Norwest/Wells Fargo. I enjoyed working with him in both Great Falls and Cheyenne. It always amazed me the passion and enthusiasm he had for local history especially the Lewis & Clark endeavors in our area. I was able to have a great coversation with him just after Thanksgiving which I will always cherish.
Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Mary,
Pat and I were so saddened to learn of Bob's recent passing. At Lawrence, he and I were the closest of friends, although we were in two different fraternities. Bob always set the bar for integrity and consideration of others. He will be dearly missed by those of us who will always consider Bob to be a best friend.
Our deepest sympathy,

Mary and Family,
It was shocking to learn of Bob's passing and my heart and prayers go out to all of you.
We'll miss Bob's expertise as the consummate historian when he hopped aboard the tour bus to enlighten Elderhostel and other folks about Charlie Russell, Lewis & Clark, fur trade in the area, Fort Benton, etc. He dressed and played the part of historian magnificently to the delight of all around him.....probably still doing so in heaven too!
May God bless you all with strength and courage during this difficult time.

Dear Mary & Family,
I am so sorry to read about Bob's passing. I had the priveledge of getting to know him through the River & Plains Board. I was always impressed with his knowledge, attention to detail and his ability to get things done. He was a class act and a true gentleman. He will be greatly missed by the community.

Dear Mary,
Randy & I are very saddened by Bob's death. We didn't know that he was ill. What a wonderful fellow he was! We CM Russell Museum docents loved listening to his talks on Charlie's family, friends, painting highlights. I served on the Library Board with him years ago and appreciated his humor and dedication to helping his community access reading materials. We had a fun trip to the
American Prairie Reserve with him, too. He just had a great zest for history and life!
Although I haven't seen you in years, you hold a special place in my heart for your compassion, laughter, & help during and after my first pregnancy, way back in 1979!
Randy & I grieve with you for the loss of a dear friend and wonderful human being.
Warmly,
Nora Gray

It was my privilege to know Bob and occasionally work with him. I'm grateful for each opportunity, but I sure will miss him. My condolences to his family.

Bob will be greatly missed. The first time I met him was at the Agricultral, he was telling Mary all about the Hornaday buffalo, I stood behind him and quietly listened to see if he was getting his story straight, he did a good job of it but I did have a oick on him some just to make him smile.
