Earl Ralph Grove, 84

Moccasin —Earl Ralph Grove died unexpectedly July 14, 2013 in Hobson, Montana. Earl was born September 22, 1928 to Edwin T. and Hazel E. (Hanchett) Grove. He grew up on the Green Ranch west of Buffalo, Montana, loving the land from the very beginning. He graduated from Buffalo High School in 1946 and attended Montana State College for a short period of time. He served in the US Army during the Korean War, serving in Europe. He worked as an electrician, carpenter, crop sprayer, and school bus driver for several years before going full time into farming and ranching.

He met Patricia A. Tax after a local church dinner and married her on Dec 31, 1955. In the spring of 1961, they relocated to the Moccasin ranch on Grove Lane, raising their family of 5 children: Christine (Jeff) Volf of Judith Gap; Greg (Karen) Grove and Steve (Cathy) Grove of Moccasin; Jenni Grove of Great Falls; and Margaret Grove (deceased).

He is also survived by grandchildren, Brent Volf, Todd (Amy) Volf, and Evan (Brittany) Volf; Fr. Kevin Grove, Jeremy (Amanda) Grove, and Heidi (Christopher) Linhart; Brandy (Mike) Malcher, and Bud Inman, and great grandchildren Justin, Rylee, Austin, and Cooper Malcher; Noah Volf, Ava, and Leah Grove; and Emma Volf. He is also survived by sister Opal Rung of Lewistown; sister-in-laws Loyce Sebastian Howard and Vera Pilgeram of Great Falls, Janice (Paul) Andrilenas of Alexandria, Virginia, and Kathy (Mauri) Driscoll of Rochester, Minnesota, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He spent his life loving his family, his God, his community, and his country. He was always the epitome of the good neighbor always willing to help his fellow man. He touched so many lives over the years from young to old.

He played and loved many sports throughout his life, loving golf until he could no longer play. He was found in younger years behind the home plate umpiring little league games, many years after his boys were done playing. A faithful Tiger fan in the old tiger dome in the upper corner balcony, you could always know that Earl was present by his cheering…. He was recognized by the Montana High School Association with a Super Fan Award.

He was an active 50+ year member of the American Legion, serving every office throughout the years. He could often be found playing cards with his Senior Citizen friends and cribbage with anyone—especially his grandchildren. He followed his children throughout their endeavors, and then his grandchildren and great grandchildren as well.

He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia, his parents, brother Forrest E. Grove, sister Velma Faye Grove Brown, and daughter Margie Grove.

A Vigil Service will be held Thursday, July 18, 2013 at 7pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hobson. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Hobson School Gymnasium at 11 am on July 19, 2013. Interment will follow at the Philbrook Cemetery with military honors presented by the Hobson American Legion, Post #76.
