TOWNSEND - Former Great Falls resident Joseph Melvin Knutson, 92, of Townsend, an insurance agent for Sons of Norway and Midland Insurance, died of natural causes Tuesday at Broadwater Health Care Center in Townsend.

A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date. Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Survivors include his daughters Carol Kanta, Thealyn Knutson and Marlene Jorgenson, all of Three Forks; a sister, Alma Bertelsen of Froid; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Joe was born March 14, 1914, to John and Grace Knutson, in Froid. He grew up and attended schools in Froid.
He married Ethel Nefzger in 1940 in Vancouver, Wash. They divorced in 1962. He married Ruth Graham in 1964 in Bellevue, Wash. She died in 1981. In 1988, Joe married Lois Carpenter in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. She died in 2001.
Joe farmed in the Froid area and later went to work for the ASCS office in 1954 in Chinook. He started selling insurance, and owned and operated the A&W in East Helena for five years. He moved to Lewistown and later to Great Falls, where he continued to sell insurance until his retirement.
He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Eagles Lodge and Sons of Norway. He loved to fly and enjoyed fishing.
He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Knutson, Jr., in 1971; and a sister, Lenore Beck.
