Great Falls —James Rolland Hieb, 88, of Great Falls, passed away April 21st, 2014. Visitation is open to family and friends on Thursday, April 24th from 6-8PM at Croxford Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held Friday, April 25th at 10 AM in the Rose Room Chapel at Croxford's. Burial with military honors will follow at Manchester Cemetery.
James was born October 27, 1925 in Woodworth, ND to Jacob and Rose (Deede) Hieb. He graduated from high school in Jamestown, ND in 1941. James spent two years in the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagle, which took him to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. In 1957 he was married to Barbara Rask and together they raised four children.
Upon an Honorable discharge from the Army, James worked for Hogenson Construction from 1954 - 1960. His true career began in 1960 when he became a millwright for Conagra. After retirement he served as a crossing guard for the Great Falls Public Schools.
James took advantage of his love for his grandkids and bus tours by combining the two: he traveled all over the country, to include Branson, MO, San Antonio, TX, Alcatraz, CA, Nashville, TN, Kentucky and many other states. His sons have fond memories of their father coaching their baseball teams, leading Cub Scout groups and driving them to practices in the Red Bug. James was an avid horseman, he loved to camp and even built a foldout camper for the family (which his wife will tell you took longer to set up and take down than it did to camp). He was an avid Braves & Cowboys fan, but what he loved more than anything was his family.
Survivors include wife, Barbara Ann (Rask) Hieb; daughter, Debra (Brian) Pullan of Idaho; sons, Greg (Janine) Hieb, Kevin Hieb, both of Great Falls, and Jimmy (Kathy) Hieb of Idaho; brother, Frank (Joann) Hieb of North Dakota; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Those who have precede him in death are parents, Jake and Rose Hieb.
