Herbert L. Gaylord, 83, of Great Falls, a retired optician and Navy veteran, died of natural causes Monday at his home.

At his request, no services are planned. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Croxford Funeral Home and Crematory.
Survivors include his close friend, Bea VandenBos of Great Falls; two sons, Scott Gaylord of England and Herbert P. Gaylord; a daughter, Susan Solomon of Canton, Mich.; stepchildren Karen of Kalispell, Steve of Utah and Lynn of Great Falls; sisters, Lois (Dag) Dagleona and Florence Schaffer of St. Paul, Minn.; and numerous grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Madison; and his mother.
Herbert was born in St. Paul, Minn., on March 3, 1927, and received his education there. He was an optician. He came to Great Falls in 1995 for his love of the mountains.
Herbert loved music and the outdoors, as well as western movies. He had been in numerous operas and musicals. He enjoyed his family and was a wonderful grandfather. He was always happy and ready to visit with anyone.
