Grahan, Wash. Catherine Rae Hargrove (nee' Hanson) of Graham, WA, a former resident of Great Falls, died Oct. 25 at age 88 in the presence of her family.



She was born April 6, 1924 on a ranch near Rapelje, Montana to Carl and Maude Hanson. She married Walter Hargrove of Ballantine, MT in 1942 and worked at Boeing Aircraft in support of the war effort when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. When Walter's B17 bomber was shot down in France and her brother, John Ellery Hanson, was a prisoner of war in the Philippines, she joined the Women's Air Corps and served until Walter returned in 1944. Katy was an avid gardener and dedicated homemaker, raising six children while stationed with Walt at several Air Force bases during 20 years of service, including Malmstrom AFB and Elmendorf AFB near Anchorage, AK. While her husband, Walter, was with Boeing in Huntsville, AL on the Saturn V project, she was active in the Alabama American Heart Association and American Cancer society. After returning to Auburn, WA, she served as AARP Washington regional vice-president.



She is survived by her children Michael, James, John, Suzanne, Mary Elizabeth and Carl William Hargrove; by her grandchildren Walter Hargrove, Valerie Wielard, Katharine Hargrove Phinney, John Hargrove, Paul, James and Mark Hargrove and Claire Bostrom; plus six great-grandchildren, four nieces and extended family in Montana. As an Army veteran, she will be interred in the Tahoma National Military Cemetery with her husband.
