Nick was born in Eagle Bend, MN on July 6, 1929, one of seven children born to Anton and Josephine Hauer. Raised on the family farm, he worked as a teen helping his father as a brick-block mason. He married Evette Mechels from the same area on April 24, 1951 and they moved to Minneapolis where he worked as an aluminum welder, refrigeration insulator, and for a brief time in road construction.

They moved to Great Falls where he worked for the Anaconda Copper Company, Beatrice Food, Cook and Douglas Construction, Great Falls Iron Works, and in his own construction company. He later started the Hauer's Roll-O-Rena roller skating rink and owned and operated it for over 25 years.

Always an avid wood-worker, he built a menagerie of gadgets, grandfather clocks, and storage barns. He loved camping, hunting, fishing, dancing, and especially the self-built cabin in Seeley that he shared with anyone who wanted to visit.

Devoted to his family and friends, he was seldom seen alone, or not humming a tune. He played guitar with his sister at most family functions and could always be called on for a joke, a story or two, or a song. Nick and Evette are 60 year members of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish.

A former member and avid dancer in the Moose Lodge, he remained active in the Eagles and Knight of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years Evette Hauer; sons Allan (Betty) Hauer, Danny (Lisa) Hauer, and Dean (Vicky) Hauer all of Great Falls, Jerry (Beth)Hauer of Washington; sister-in-law Dianne Hauer of Great Falls; sister Lorraine (Roland) Neisen of Minnesota; brother Peter (Kathy) Hauer of Conrad; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
