I am still so shocked. I met Darrell when I did a study of language acquisition as a teenager. I will never forget his energy. When I was inducted into National Honor Society they were in search of a keynote speaker. I knew exactly who to ask. Darrell graciously accepted and his speech touched my Mother and I and the audience. We still recall his words. His influence will be forever.

Robeta and Darren, Blackfeet Nation and Montana, A great and centered man has walked on and left a unique space here on Mother Earth that can never be filled — Darrell was one of a kind. I feel saddened with his passing but also feel blessed for having crossed paths with this great man. I didn't spend a whole lot of time with Darrell but you didn't have to to know he was genuine, intelligent and spiritually grounded. He was a serious light-hearted man whose delivery was humane, humorous, intelligent and soulful. He was a great story teller, the kind that could rattle your ribs with funny stories — not jokes but observations and insights on his fellow human beings that would also stir the soul as well as make you wonder and ponder about the human condition. But most of all he was a natural leader that never got high center on politics and he made a person feel proud to be an Indian, no matter your tribal affiliation. When I saw Darrell this summer he had a radiant warm glow about him, and of course stories. I am so glad he got to bend my ears and rattle my ribs one more time. Thank you, Darrell.

Roberta and Darrin I am so saddened by your loss. All people of Montana are sharing this loss with you. I never met a finer man. He always taught me so much and made me feel like family. We will all miss his positive attitude and humor. I remember our times in the Sweet Grass Hills, Darin. Putting up tipis, learning Tribal history, and becoming friends in positive duscussions. What great memories!

This was a real shock to me. Darrell was one of the most significant influential persons in my life. In fact, I would say he changed my life because without going to his classes I would never have learned to appreciate my Blackfoot history or pursued learning the language and other history if it hadn't been for him. I never tired of hearing him talk in public or personally. He was a true leader of Blackfoot people and it's so sad that he left us so soon and unexpected. He will be missed by many people. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Roberta and Darren. Keith and Leslie Shaw

my friend Darrell once wrote...
"Living near a mountain lake in the middle of my tribal homeland, I know not what the blackbird knows, but only what he sees. What has been presented as images of Native people is less important compared to images Native people see. The real image of Native people as human beings is only in what the blackbird sees."
I hope you are looking down on us now, brother, through the eyes of the blackbird.
