Lucille Hughes Obituary

Lucille A. Hughes

Stanford —Lucille A. Hughes, 91, of Stanford, MT passed away due to natural causes on June 16, 2017 at Central MT Nursing and Rehab in Lewistown. Our beloved mother and grandmother peacefully passed into heaven surrounded by her family.

Lucille Anna Jegen was born February 19, 1926 to George and Anastasia (Weber) Jegen in Park, Kansas. She arrived 15 minutes prior to her twin brother, Bernard. She was raised on the family farm near Park.

Lucy was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and attended Gove County area schools with her brothers and sisters. She helped her father on the family farm before venturing out to take other jobs. Lucille enjoyed dressing in stylish clothes, complete with a hat, gloves and purse. She liked to travel, attend dances with family and friends, and play bingo and checkers. She also liked sewing and altering her own clothes to suit her style or the current fashion.

Lucy was a cook and nanny on farms and ranches in Kansas and Wyoming. While working in the Sheridan, WY area she did some clothes modeling for local department stores. She later went to Billings to work. While there she met Harley Hughes who convinced her to come and cook for the Hughes Livestock Co. ranch at Stanford. Lucille and Harley eventually married in 1955, remaining on the ranch and raising their 7 children there.

Lucy was well known for the delicious meals she prepared for her family and the hired help on the ranch. She enjoyed having company to visit with and always welcomed anyone that happened by to stay for whatever meal was being served. Everyone loved her homemade breads, desserts and canned goods, and usually ended up with some treats to take home.

Some of Lucille's favorite things were: jewelry, hats, collecting recipes and cookbooks, caring for animals, growing houseplants, picnics in the mountains, Sunday morning radio church programs, activities with her grandkids and listening to music while she worked in the kitchen.

Lucy was preceded in death by: her parents; brothers: John, Bernard and Lucas Jegen; sisters: Josephine Bieker, Teresa Hoffman and Katherine Jegen; and husband Harley W. Hughes, Sr. She is survived by a sister, Anna Marie Wasinger (Mankato, MN); sons: Harley (Susan) Hughes (Stanford), Gordon Hughes (Stanford); daughters: Alberta (lra) Preshinger (Joliet), Patricia (John) Antonich (Geyser), Janet (Paul) Wertheimer (Utica), Teresa (Arnie) Smith (Stanford), Connie (Joe) Moll (Great Falls); grandchildren: Jaegen Hughes, Debra (Dan) Tresch, Tara Preshinger, James (Kristan) Preshinger, Mandy (Riley) Dewitt, Owen Antonich, Victoria Antonich, Bailey Wertheimer, Morgan Wertheimer, Allison Wertheimer, Leah (Trent) Krieger, Zach (Kari) Smith, Kendra Smith, Zane Smith; great-grandchildren: Nichole (Tyler) Stidham, Ricky Fulbright, William Tresch, Brynley Krieger, Harper Krieger, Clay DeWitt; great-great- granddaughter, Lucy Stidham; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial for Lucille will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Stanford on Wednesday, June 28th at 11:00 a.m. There will be a time of viewing from 10-10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Rite of Committal will take place at the Stanford Cemetery. Following the graveside service, please join the family back at the church for a light luncheon and visiting.
