Maudsley, Elizabeth (Betty)

Elizabeth (Betty) Josephine Shaw Maudsley, 98, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012. Betty was born in St. Francis, Wis., to Elmer Shaw and Martha Zoch Shaw.

Betty graduated from Fond du Lac High School and upon graduation attended Oshkosh Teachers College.

Betty married Charles Kenneth (Ken) Maudsley on May 17, 1941, in Green Bay, Wis. and lived in Green Bay for 13 years, where their four daughters were born. After leaving Green Bay, they lived in Eau Claire, Wis., St. Paul, Minn., Sioux City, Iowa and Fort Worth, Texas. Upon retirement in 1975, Betty and Ken split their time between Sister Bay, Wis. and McAllen, Texas. Betty really loved her years in Sister Bay, especially the summer afternoons she spent on the deck.

During her life Betty enjoyed sewing, knitting, gardening, painting, music and travelling. She and her husband took long car trips to visit family and friends. She was the navigator and an excellent map reader. She had been to Europe several times plus a trip to Ireland and many trips to Mexico.

Betty was a long time member of Stella Maris-St. Rosalia parish and was involved in the Stella Maris Sodality. She was also very involved in early volunteer activities at the Birch Creek Music Camp. In recent years, Betty enjoyed her friends in the Bailey's Harbor Senior Lunch group and will miss the Wednesday gatherings.

Betty, a devoted wife and mother, is survived by Ken, her loving husband of 71 plus years. Her four daughters, Martha Sauter, Sheila Hedberg, Mary Beth Maudsley, Sarah (Michael) Novotny treasured all the wonderful time they spent with their Mom. They will miss her kindness.

Betty's nine grandchildren, Stephen (Jessica) Sauter, David (Ruth) Sauter, Jennifer (Andrew) Sauter Sargent , Erika (Scott) Talvitie, Kirsten Hedberg, Nicole Gifford (Doug Melaas), Krista Novotny, Alisha (Timothy) Getschow, Elizabeth (Justin) Vianello, all have wonderful memories of G'ma. In the last few years Betty has enjoyed being a Nana to her 16 great-grandchildren. Betty was treasured by her godson Dick (Caroline) Marks and also loved by her nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Martha Shaw; her grandmother, Elizabeth Hanlon Shaw; her brother, Robert Shaw; her son-in-law, Charles Sauter; her brother-in-law, William Michel; and her mother and father-in-law, Susan Vay and Charles Maudsley.

The family would like to thank the staff at Ministry Door County Medical Center and The Scandia Village for their kindnesses and the other care givers that assisted them.

Family and friends may call at Stella Maris Parish - Sister Bay, from 9 a.m. until the hour of the Mass at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012.
