Gaura, Jane E.
Jane E. (McKnight) Gaura, 81, Green Bay, formerly of San Bernardino, CA., passed away peacefully on Friday, March 15, 2013, at Tender Hearts Assisted Living in Green Bay. The daughter of the late John R. & Ethel (Todd) McKnight was born on June 1, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio.
In the winter of 1933, during the worst of the Depression and Dust Bowl, the family moved to San Diego, CA., to find work. Jane's parents divorced when she was 11, and she moved to Banning, CA., with her mother. She met Isadore "Ike" Gaura in 1950, and they were married on March 16, 1952, in San Bernardino, CA., upon his return from Korea. The couple lived in San Bernardino, CA., for over fifty years.
Ike decided to pursue a career with the Air Force after serving eight years in the Marines. Jane traveled with Ike as they were stationed in Burlington, VT., Victoryville, CA., Lakenheath, England, and Goldsboro, NC. Ike retired after 20 years of service in San Bernardino, CA.
Jane retired on June 29, 1990, from Pacific Telesis (AT&T) after 25 years of service as an operator and customer service representative. They were able to travel the world, which they both enjoyed immensely. The couple had no children.
Survivors include her three sisters-in-law, Stella Mathews, Elizabeth Oskey, and Christina Tilque; and 28 nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Ike, on December 30, 2011; four sisters-in-law, Julia Pszanka, Lottie Grochowski, Mary Kariotis, and Clara Sandstrom; and two brothers-in-law, Peter and Anthony Gaura.
Friends may call at St. John the Baptist Church, 2597 Glendale Ave., Green Bay, on Tuesday, after 10:00 a.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Fr. John Bergstadt presiding. Burial will be held in St. John Cantius Cemetery, Sobieski, at a later date.
