Mettelka, John "Jack' Robert
John "Jack" Robert Mettelka, 83 of Eagle River, Wis., formerly of Green Bay Wis., died unexpectedly at home on Dec. 10, 2013. He was born on Christmas Day 1929, in Wausau Wis., to Erwin and Arlyle (Anderson) Mettelka. Jack served with the United States Navy
during the Korean Conflict
and also spent six years in the Air Force Reserve. After serving his country he moved to Milwaukee, to take a job with the Veri-Typer Corporation as a Service Manager. While there, he met the love of his life, Mary Carol Schmitt from Wauwatosa. They married on June 16, 1956 and enjoyed 57 years together. In 1969, he was transferred to Green Bay, where he worked for several years until the company closed. Jack worked as a manager and then Vice President of Romo Inc. until 1980.
On Jan. 4, 1981, Jack along with his family and good friend Dennis Burke, opened a business, Jaymar Screen Printers Inc. in Wisconsin Rapids. In 1983, the business was moved to Green Bay and shortly after in 1986, Jack retired to Land O' Lakes, leaving Jaymar in the capable hands of his son, Tracy and daughter, Mary Lee. Several years later, Jack and Mary moved to a new home on Deerskin Lake in Eagle River. Jack was known to his friends and family as a "Jack-of-all-Trades" because he loved working with his hands, and was a true craftsman.
He loved music especially blues, jazz, country and big band. He loved buying cars and reminiscing about the good ole' days and adventures with his "Pot Luck" friends from Green Bay.
Jack had several nick names from family and friends. "Buwana" during hunting, "AJ" for his driving skills and "Bullwinkle" from his wife and children for always having the answer.
Jack truly enjoyed being in the Northwoods. He spent many years as a young boy at the cabin that he, his grandfather and father built in the 1940's. He and his family spent many years at the cabin making life long memories of what was lovingly known as "The Vilas Hilton."
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Robert.
