Vanness, Leland E.

Leland E. Vanness, 96, Green Bay, formerly of New Franken and Florida, died Sunday, July 14, 2013, at a local hospital. He was born March 4, 1917, in New Franken to Gus and Ida (Hannon) Vanness.

Leland graduated from Michigan State University. After graduating, he worked on transmissions for Ford Motor Company, where he worked alongside of Jim Thorpe. He met Helen Garnhardt and they married in February, 1944. Leland taught many people how to play instruments, especially the Spanish and steel guitar. He married Helen Kaye in June, 1955, and together they raised Leland's five children on the family farm. She preceded him in death in May, 1983. Leland was a member of the Moose Lodge.

Leland is survived by his children, Neasa (Jimmy) Thornton, Hurst, TX; James Vanness, Indianapolis, IN; Sue Ann (Dr. Jerry) Scott, Fort Worth, TX; Nancy (Dan) Casey, Green Bay; Julia (Richard) Spellman, Fort Worth, TX; ten grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren; his favorite aunt, Orpha (Horace) Lucas, who was only six months older than Leland and was more like his sister than an aunt; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his second wife, Helen, and his infant son, Leland Jr.
