Lois Marie Birmingham, 96, Sturgeon Bay, passed away early Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Whispering Heights CBRF.
She was born Sept. 7, 1915, in Newton, Manitowoc County, the daughter of the late Charles Henry Barnstein MD and Alma Katherine Hansen. Lois graduated from Lincoln High School, Manitowoc in 1933. On May 11, 1939, she married Lee Bagnall Birmingham of Sturgeon Bay in Newton. He preceded her in death on Sept. 26, 1994. Lois enjoyed being a homemaker and raising her children, but she and Lee looked forward to the fall harvest season when they worked for their friends at Wood's Orchard picking apples.
Lois was a member of the United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Sarah Circle. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Honor Chapter #1, and the NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Survivors include her daughter, Ginny (Richard) Haen, Sturgeon Bay; daughter-in-law, Wendy Birmingham, Bettendorf, Iowa; five grandchildren, CDR Jason (Stephanie) Haen USN, Brussels, Belgium; Jennifer (Clinton) Henry, Sturgeon Bay; Carrie (Mike, DDS) Franzman, Bettendorf, Iowa; Kimberly (fiance, Rich Case) Birmingham, Milwaukee; Jonathan Birmingham, Greenleaf, Wis.; eight great-grandchildren, Brewster, Charlie and Caroline Haen, Carter and Jack Henry, Avery, Gabe and Claire Franzman; two sisters, Dorothy Strom, Alturas, Calif.; and June Fledderjohn, Greenville, Penn.; and two sisters-in-law, Emmy Lou Barnstein, Malone Wis.; and Bea Barnstein, Lenexa Kan.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Lee; one son, John C. Birmingham; infant grandson, Gregory Mark Haen; and two brothers, Norman J. Barnstein MD, and Charles H. Barnstein, PhD; and a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Lester Malzahn.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Huehns Funeral Home is assisting the family. Memorials may be made in her memory to the Sturgeon Bay United Methodist Church.
