Robert Cyrus

Robert "Bob'" Cyrus

Robert Claude "Bob" Cyrus, 74, of the Little Sturgeon area of Door County passed away at his home on January 14, 2014, with family by his side.

Bob was born on December 4, 1939, in Hammond, IN, the second of three children born to Claude and Catherine (Portz) Cyrus. He graduated from Hammond Technical Vocational High School in 1958, and married his wife, Pauline Rauer, in 1960. Bob completed his electrical apprenticeship and worked as an electrician for fifteen years through IBEW Local 697 in Northwest Indiana. Based on their love of the outdoors and desire to start their own business, Bob and Pauline and their three children moved to Door County, Wisconsin in 1973. There they ran their own business for eight years, after which he worked at Peterson Builders for 18 years and Bay Shipbuilding for a short time, both firms in Sturgeon Bay. After that, he was employed for nine years at Paper Converting in Green Bay, and then later retired from Palmer Johnson in Sturgeon Bay in 2008.

Over the years, Bob was active with many community organizations, including the Door Peninsula Astronomy Club, Brussels Lions Club, Gardner Rifle Club, and the Door County Fish, Farm and Game Club. In addition, he served as an Area Commissioner with the Boy Scouts of America.

Bob's sense of humor, caring and generous nature, dedication to family and friends, and jolly laugh will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He will especially be missed during the holiday season, where for the past 12 years he brought joy to young and old alike, waving with a "ho ho ho" from the sleigh at the end of the Sturgeon Bay Christmas parade.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Pauline, of Little Sturgeon; his three children, Linda (Keith) Friede, of Edina, MN; Bob Cyrus of South Chicago Heights, IL; Laura (Doug) Stuart of Munster, IN; seven grandchildren, Kevin (Schell) Friede, Kenny Friede, Stephanie Gajewski, Joshua Cyrus, Alexandra Cyrus, Katie Gajewski and Jared Cyrus; and one great-grand child, Chloe Tackett. He is also survived by brother, Howard (Ruth) Cyrus of Highland, IN; sister, Claudia Lewis of Hammond, IN; brother- and sister-in-law, Jim and Marge Rauer of Highland, IN; and dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends too numerous to count.

The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the doctors and staff of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Aurora Baycare Medical Center in Green Bay and the Southern Care Hospice Team. There will be a memorial service at the Forbes Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay on at 11:00 a.m. on March 22, 2014. In June, a second celebration of his life will be held in the Northwest Indiana area. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to The Wounded Warriors Project
