James Temp Obituary

Temp, James Arthur

James Arthur Temp, 79, Green Bay, passed away on the evening of Sunday November 25, 2012. Jim was born on October 10, 1933 in La Crosse Wisconsin, to the late Arthur Temp and Bernadette (Fuchs) Temp. On December 17, 1955, he married Carol Jean Sweeney of Delavan, Wisconsin. They proudly raised four beautiful daughters, a baker's dozen grandchildren and one great-grandchild as follows:

Bethany and (Tom) Lynn, Tommy, Heather, and Melissa and (Joel) O'Brien; Kelly and (Dave) Doran, Nicholas and (Sarah) Bratkowski and their son Parker, Taylor, Logan, and Conner Doran; Polly Baker, Emma, Hannah, Cole and Nolan; Megan and (Todd) Krempleski, Ethan and Kyler. He is also survived by his sister, Joanne (husband, the late Bob) Bagnefski, brother-in-law, Jim Sweeney and wife Donna, nieces, nephew, many lifelong friends and constant canine companions, Arthur and Annabelle.

Jim attended the University of Wisconsin Madison from 1952 to 1955, where he lettered in both baseball and football. In 1953, he started on the Rose Bowl team. In 1955, he started on the College All-Star Team and in that same year voted University of Wisconsin's Athlete of the year. Jim was also chosen as an Honorable Mention All American. His sophomore year, he was offered a baseball contract from the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1955, he was voted captain of his team and went on to win a silver medal playing on the United States Pan-American team.

In 1955, he was drafted number two in the second round by the Green Bay Packers and played until a career ending shoulder injury in 1960. He was starter at defensive end and also played special teams.

In recognition of his athletic career and achievements, Jim was inducted into the La Crosse Aquinas High School Athletic Hall of Fame, was voted First-Team Defensive End on Milwaukee Journals all time All-State Team - 100 Years of Wisconsin High School Football and voted Badger of the Year in Brown County and recognized as an alumnus "who has made a significant and lasting impact in his community." In 1985, Jim was awarded the UWGB Chancellor Award, the University's highest community honor. This award honored his generosity of both his time and talents to lead the teams of study, or promote or raise funds for the University.

Jim's accomplishments continued beyond his athletic career. While playing for the Packers, he worked part time for Murphy Insurance/Alexander & Alexander (now AON). Throughout his lifelong insurance career, he went on to become President of AON until his retirement in 1998. He was extremely active in the community, serving on numerous boards and committees: Green Bay Packers Executive Committee and Board of Directors, President of the University of Wisconsin Madison National "W" Club, UWGB Housing Board and a residence hall named in his honor on the UWGB Campus, Board of Directors-Prime Federal Savings (Bank Mutual), Board Member of Family Services as well as Scholarships Inc., Chairman of the YMCA, Outstanding Rotarian Award, and State Board of Insurance Agents.

His volunteer work included: Bellin Hospital, Unity Hospice, Paul's Pantry, Resurrection Catholic Parish, St Joseph Academy, Notre Dame Academy and lifelong member of the Noon Optimist and Serra Clubs.

Jim's most outstanding assets are his honesty, integrity and his faith in our Lord.

Family and friends may call Friday, November 30, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church, 333 Hilltop Drive, Allouez. I just discovered this shocking news. Carol Jean, I'm sorry we haven't met, but you're obviously are a great lady. Your loving family will care for you. Jim and I grew up together, five blocks apart, and were family friends. We have always been great friends, although we haven't communicated in over a year. We attended Holy Trinity grade school, where he was already "Dumbo," our name for him. It was actually a name of great respect. We then attended Aquinas together, he being two years behind me. We played on the same teams in my grades 7-12, especially softball and baseball, I believe Aquinas was the city baseball champion or co-champion during those years. I recall our discussion after he left the University, deciding if he'd sign a baseball or football contract--interesting discussion! He liked football because there was more action. Jim, you're a wonderful person. Well, he was a Wisconsin boy all the way!. I will miss him.

Mr. Temp, a true gentleman of integrity, humility,& love! It was evident in every aspect of his life that he loved 'his girls'. I was blessed to have known him, and the Temp family. He loved us as Polly's friends. So many wonderful memor
ies from grade school thru recent. A sad day for those of us left here to carry on and do our best to make the world a better place. A joyous day for all the Dad Angels who have gone before us and were waiting to greet Mr. Temp!

Much love to a wonderful family. Mr. Temp will be missed, but thought of daily. Sandra Beaudry Ponkratz

Carol Jean, working with Jim all those years I often heard him express his disdain for the computer. So it seems a bit odd communicating our sorrow to you via the web. Our sympathies go out to you and the entire Temp family. Jim was genuinely one of a kind. Our prayers and thoughts are with you and the entire Temp family at this time.

I'm very sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I first met Jim in 1951, State Catholic Basketball Tounament, then held at the old Van Dyk Gym, on St. Norbert's campus. I've considered him a friend ever since.
We'd run into one another from time to time and always had some great exchanges.
He was a good one and will be missed.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all of Jim's extended family.
