Andrew R. Bylenga

Andrew R. Bylenga, 77, of Sturgeon Bay, WI, passed away at his home on September 12, 2012. He was born on May 3, 1935, in Grand Rapids, MI, to Peter and Ruth (Wheaton) Bylenga. Andy most wanted to be remembered as a great salesman. He began his business career at age 8, during WWII, collecting waste newspapers and selling them to recycling mills and later went on to sell papers through his junior high years. After graduating from Ottawa Hills High School in 1954, Andy attended Hope College. After his early start in business, he created an impressive sales resume and a long list of sales achievements, which included becoming the youngest sales manager for the 3M National Advertising Co.

Upon leaving 3M after 17 years, Andy founded Arbor Advertising Co. and the Stage Coach Car Wash, both in Pinellas County, Florida. After selling these businesses and retiring to Sturgeon Bay in 1987, he built another Stage Coach Car Wash in 1994. Andy played as hard as he worked and may have been the most enthusiastic person you would ever want to meet. Andy was a member of the Sturgeon Bay Lions Club and the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club. His passions were riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles, boating, fishing for perch, trolling for salmon on Lake Michigan, and entertaining friends at "Andy's Fish Camp." Andy will be remembered for being a hospitable neighbor with an open door. Those who knew and loved Andy have lost an irreplaceable friend.

Andy is survived by three daughters, Carol (Ron) Phillips, Stevenville, MI; Sharon Bylenga (Bill Tagliani), Bursins, Switzerland; and Barbara Bylenga, San Francisco, CA; four grandchildren, Ariella and David Phillips, John and Jesse Tagliani; and one brother, Peter Bylenga, Greenville, SC. Andy was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bruce and Richard; and one sister, Phyllis Kern.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 16, 2012, at Bay View Lutheran Church (340 W. Maple St., Sturgeon Bay) with Rev. Timothy Malek officiating. Burial will be at Bayside Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. A celebration of Andy's life will be held at the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club immediately after the burial. Memorials may be given to the Door County YMCA or Ministry Door County Medical Center.
