Barnard, Carolyn
Carolyn Gibson Barnard, Green Bay, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, August 10, 2016 in Madison, surrounded by her family.
Born and raised in Spartanburg, SC, Carolyn's southern charm never left her. She had an enthusiastic personality with a wonderful sense of humor. She loved her life and enjoyed it to the fullest until the very end. "Let's kick up our heels," she often said.
When her parents moved north to Milwaukee, then to Green Bay, during the Depression (1930's), she met Michael J. Barnard at East High. The teenage sweethearts married in 1946 and enjoyed a long and happy marriage. They raised their eight children in Green Bay. "Four boys and four girls….that's what we call 'family planning'!" she joked. Although more exotic travel beckoned later, their early travel consisted of piling the 8 children into the station wagon for a Sunday fried-chicken picnic somewhere close by: Point Beach, Loon Lake (Shawano), or Baileys Harbor, Door County.
A devoted Catholic, Carolyn converted to the faith that sustained her, while working at the Chicago Sun Times, during the years when her husband Michael served in World War II. She was baptized, married, and now memorialized, at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay.
An accomplished artist, Carolyn enjoyed painting iconic scenes of her beloved Wisconsin: Lambeau Field, Kaaps, Heritage Hill, and the Madison Capitol, among many others. Her art training started on Thursday mornings at the Neville Museum, her weekly break from homemaking.
Her primary focus was first and always her family, but she was also able to explore her own creativity, as the children grew up, and to develop expertise in her life-long passion, watercolor. She played violin as a child; she loved books, music, especially Big Band jazz, and all the arts. She was curious and was always a life-long learner, interested in the world around her, especially the beauties of nature.
Her community involvement included the YMCA, St. Norbert College, and the Green Bay Art Colony.
Carolyn is survived by her children: Jane Barnard, Stevens Point, James (Barb) Barnard, Madison, Daniel (Debbie) Barnard, Green Bay, Mary Barnard Feit (John) Mt Horeb, WI, William, Reno, NV, Anne Bologna (Peter), New Jersey and Betsy Barnard (Larry), Madison. She is further survived by 19 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a brother, John Gibson, Milwaukee and daughter-in-law, Pat Barnard, Atlanta.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael; son, Thomas and sister, Dorothy Bender, Manitowoc.
Visitation will be held at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME (340 S. Monroe Ave., Green Bay), Saturday, September 3, 2016 from 10 to 11:45 AM. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CATHEDRAL (140 S. Monroe Ave., Green Bay) at 12 NOON with Bishop Robert Morneau officiating. Private burial will be in Allouez Catholic Cemetery. Anne and Betsey, I am so sorry to hear about your mother. She was a talented and wonderful woman. She could be described in the Bible as a capable wife. "She delights to work with her hands...Her children rise up and declare her happy;
Her husband rises up and praises her." Proverbs 31:13, 28. May God bless you and bring you comfort during this time.

The Art world lost such a beautiful, talented, delightful and loving lady, Carrie Barnard, the day she left for her heavenly reward!
She was my dear friend, we shared many fun times enjoying art. Carrie was the President of The Green Bay Art Colony, what a wonderful time that was.
When she held her art classes, she not only was so well prepared, she would also treat us to a delicious lunch. Her Cream of Broccoli soup was one of her specialties.
Everyone who had the good fortune to know Carrie, felt blessed! She was such a beauty, inside and out, with that gorgeous hair and twinkle in her eye! I really loved her!
To her dear family members, you have my heart felt sympathy. I, and the members of The Green Bay Art Colony, share your lost! May God Bless you all. Sincerely, with love and prayers,

It was so sad to hear of your mom's passing. I will forever cherish the watercolor she gave to my wife and I for a wedding gift. I feel so blessed that I had a chance to speak with her recently. She lit up my day.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Carolyn Barnard in New York City. She was visiting my dear friends, her daughter Anne and her husband Peter.
Carolyn lit up the room, was charming and delightful to be with. The world is a little less bright without her.

Words cannot explain how much I loved Carolyn and will miss her terribly. She truly was one of my dearest friends. We have been friends for 38 years. I was only 19 when I met her and she was about 54 or 55 years old but there was no generation gap between us.
She was so full of life and I always felt so good when I was with her. She was beautiful, classy, kind, funny, generous and unwavering in her love for her family. She was so proud of every single one her children and grandchildren and always had a new story to tell when we would get together.
She always said she could not wait for the day she would be reunited with Mike and it gives me great comfort knowing that she is finally with the love of her life again.
The world is a lot less colorful now that she is no longer with us. I am honored to have two of Carolyn's paintings hanging in my home.
Rest In Peace my Dear Sweet Friend.
My prayers and sympathy are with Carolyn's Family.
