Sister Geraldine Smurawa, 85, a Sister of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis for 70 years, died Saturday, April 27, 2013 at St. Joseph Motherhouse in Stevens Point.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 2, 2013 at St. Joseph Motherhouse Chapel, 1300 Maria Dr., Stevens Point, with her nephew the Rev. Michael Betley and the Rev. Todd Mlsna officiating. Burial to follow in the convent cemetery. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
The former Dolores Smurawa was born September 1, 1927 in Pulaski, WI to the late John and Bernice (Jankowski) Smurawa. She entered the community on August 10, 1943 and professed perpetual vows on August 10, 1950. Sister Smurawa was a teacher/principal in Catholic schools for 50 years. Other ministries included parish organist, volunteer teacher's aide, tutoring and ministry to the homebound. Locally she served at SS.Cyril & Methodius School, Eton; Assumption BVM School, Pulaski; St, Thomas More, Annunciation, Trinity, Holy Apostles and St. Joseph Schools, all in Green Bay.
Survivors include two sisters, Therese Janowski and Bernadine Smurawa; two brother, John (Diana) and Ferdinand (Donna); a sister-in-law Bernice Smurawa, and a brother-in-law Irwin Betley; nieces, nephews; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Edward, Arthur, Norbert, and two sisters, Lorraine Betley and Sister Elaine Smurawa. One brother-in-law, Joseph Janowski.
