La Plante, Howard W. "Peno"

Howard W. (Peno) La Plante, 80, of Green Bay peacefully passed away Saturday, September 29, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by family.

He was born October 5, 1931 to the late Howard La Plante Sr. and Amelia (Malchow) La Plante.

The youngest of three children, Howard was raised on the family homestead in Suamico, WI., on the west shore of the bay of Green Bay, just inside Longtail Island.

He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict as a medic.

On July 4, 1953, he married Helen Konopka at St. Casimir's Catholic Church in Krakow, WI., and together they raised six children.

Dad was most proud of his work ethic, working two or three jobs most of his life. Former bosses have always told him "if we want the job done right, we ask Howard to do it". He was employed by the United States Postal Service for 31 years, starting as floor sweeper and retiring as an investigator, NEVER missing a single day of work. Along the way, he worked multiple jobs and owned a number of small businesses. He was a milk hauler, cattle farmer, real estate agent, land developer, heavy crane operator, and driving instructor.

After his retirement, he became an insurance claims adjuster for Associated Claims, and together with his son Tom, they began AABC Driving School, where he taught countless teenagers safe driving. Tom continues this business today.

Until his illness prevented him, Dad enjoyed traveling, spending time in Florida with his brother Claire and finding the best cruise deals with Tom.

He could be found anytime day or night tinkering in his workshop. He enjoyed making birdhouses, lawn furniture and whirlygigs. He also loved to drive his Moped, going to the casino, or relaxing at the cottage on Shawano Lake.

He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Helen; his six children and their families, Tom (Michelle Mann) La Plante, children, Scott (Sonya) La Plante, Steve La Plante, Kenny (Norma)La Plante, children Matt (Becky) La Plante, Shelly (Chad) Hendricks, Diane (Roger Thario) Elliott, children Bobby Elliott, Emilie, Karlynn, and Adam Thario, Sharon (Phil) Wilson, children P.J., Emily, and Haley Wilson, Paul La Plante and daughter Courtney La Plante, Michael (Laura Rasmussen) La Plante. Also, five beautiful great- granddaughters, Clarissa La Plante, Maddie and Macy La Plante and Anna and Kate Hendricks. He is further survived by his brother, Claire (Patti) La Plante ; his sister Carmen Schmechel; many nieces, nephews, and cousins, including a special cousin, Eileen Malchow.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter- in-law, Linda La Plante.

Special thanks to Dad's "Sweethearts" the 300 wing staff of Rennes Nursing Home in De Pere where he spent the last month of his life. Your kindness and compassion to Dad and our entire family will never be forgotten.
