Matthew died at home at the age of 97 on Saturday, October 26, 2013 with his children at his side, Margie, Gary, Gloria and Tom; grandchildren, Nicholas Jaros, Lisa Jaros, Dean Van Kauwenbergh and great-grandchildren, Samantha and Abigail Van Kauwenbergh.

Matt was born October 17, 1916 in Chicago to the late John and Agnes (Kaspreyk) Zepka. On January 12, 1946, he married Anne Veriha at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Peshtigo, Wisconsin.

Survivors also include his son, Leonard Zepka and his wife Linda and their 6 children and 6 grandchildren, his sister, Lottie Malinowski; sister in law, Helen Padgett, Diana Veriha, Georgianna Veriha and brother-in-law, John Veriha and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and friends.

A World War II Veteran, Matt fought courageously in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star. He served in the United States Army Air Corps from June 19, 1941 to November 24, 1945. Matt also worked in the CC camps in Laona, Wisconsin for three years and several other camps. He was also a member of the VFW Post 476, in Loomis, Wisconsin for 53 years.

Matt retired on April 3, 1981, from Schwinn Bicycle Company after working there for 42 years. As an avid sportsman who enjoyed fishing with his wife. Both Matt and Anne loved going to their cottage (or as we called it, The Honeymoon Resort) in Wabeno, Wisconsin, each year for the entire summer since 1966. He also enjoyed hunting with his brothers-in-law and nephews.

Matt also shared old world soup recipes that he learned from his mom and were enjoyed by all.

Matt was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Anne; his parents; a brother, Chester; a sister-in-law and six brothers-in-law.

Friends may call at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave. from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday. A Parish wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday. Friends may also call at Annunciation Catholic Church, 401 Gray St. from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Don Everts officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Suamico cemetery.
