He was born on March 26, 1931, in Egg Harbor, the son of the late Andrew and Clara Harriet (LaPlante) Kaczmarek. Joe was a 1949 graduate of Gibraltar High School. On May 18, 1957, he married Bernadine Elaine Delfosse in Algoma. She preceded him in death on October 31, 2000.

Joe was employed with the Door County Highway Department for 43 years, retiring as the Superintendent of the Crushing Department in 1993. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working in the woods, and going to his cabin in Pembine. Joe was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

He will be dearly missed by his four children and their families: daughter, Chris Christianson of Sturgeon Bay (and her children, Amy, Matthew (Melly) (and their son, Brayden), Sarah (Colin) Zelhofer (and their son, Nicholas)); son, Thomas (Jean) of Sturgeon Bay (and their sons, Nathan, Justin, and Brandon); daughter Susan (David) Zernicke of Green Bay (and their son, Jacob); and daughter, Karen (Patrick) Lamirande of De Pere (and their daughters, Jessica, Anna and Natalie). Joe is also survived by his sister, Helen Peterson of Sturgeon Bay.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Clara; wife, Bernadine; brother, Stanley; and son-in-law, Dale Christianson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Bob Stegmann as celebrant. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery Mausoleum.
