Charles Travis Hahn
Charles Travis Hahn, age 87, of Appleton, Wisconsin, passed away at Appleton Medical Center on Friday, July 25, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. Charles was born on September 16, 1926, in Jackson, Tennessee, to the late Howard Merle and Eunice (Barnes) Hahn. Growing up in Mobile, Alabama, and Kirkwood, Missouri, he graduated from Kirkwood High School at age 16. After completing 2 1/2 years of service in the United States Army, Charles earned a degree in Mathematics Education from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
Charles was united in marriage to the love of his life, MaryAnn Cougill in June of 1948. They made homes together and raised four children in St Louis, Missouri; Louisville, Kentucky; Neenah, Wisconsin; Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; and Appleton, where they have resided since 1978.
Following a brief teaching stint, Charles pursued a long career in marketing medical supplies. His marketing skills and business acumen promoted the growth and success of the companies for which he worked, and he formed many close, trusting relationships along the way.
Charles was an avid, life-long golfer, bridge player and sports enthusiast. In his later years nothing gave him more pleasure than his weekly football wager with his son, Victor, to whom he still owes $2.00! Charles and MaryAnn were devoted supporters of and volunteers for the Salvation Army and they were recently honored as 25-year donors.
Besides his family, Charles' greatest love in life was music. His beautiful tenor voice blessed many people throughout the years starting as a teenager when he traveled as a soloist with a circuit rider. He sang in the choirs of every church they attended, often serving as soloist even into the last years of his life.
Charles will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 66 years, MaryAnn; daughter Deborah (Harlan) Nuss, Marshalltown, Iowa; son Victor, West Palm Beach, Florida; daughters, Rebecca (Dennis) Schmitz, Green Bay, and Lisa (Fred) Koetting, The Woodlands, Texas; sister Peggy (John) Rahkola, Surprise, Arizona; sister-in-law, Kay (Bill) Farr, Grand Rapids, Michigan; ten loving grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Howard Merle and Marjorie Hahn; and his step-father Urbano Delano Espejo.
The memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2014, at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 325 East Franklin Street, Appleton, with Rev. Harlan Huss and Rev. Markus Wegenast officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Saturday from Noon to the time of services. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his name to benefit the Appleton Salvation Army, P. O. Box 1605, Appleton, Wisconsin 54912. Heartfelt thanks go to the 8th Floor Staff of Appleton Medical Center for the exceptional and compassionate care extended to Charles and his family during the last week of his life.
