Gersek, Edmund Jr.
Edmund J. Gersek Jr., 71, Green Bay resident, died unexpectedly Wednesday, August 6, 2014, at a local hospital. He was born March 22, 1943, in Green Bay to Lorraine (VanLanen) Gersek and the late Edmund Gersek Sr. Ed attended Premontre High School, graduating in 1961. Following high school, he served in the US Army Reserves for a six month training period.
Ed worked as a young boy with his dad in the construction business, helping run it together until 1980, when he took over and became the successful business enterprise of Ed Gersek Inc. In 2005, he was forced into retirement, but had too much dirt in his blood and started Gersek Excavating and E & G Trucking. Even to his last day he had his work boots on, working on an engine for the excavator. Ed married his soul mate, the former Barbara Vandenhouten on December 7, 2012, in Green Bay.
He is survived by his three children: Ben (Sheila) Gersek, Green Bay; Suzanne (Rich) Estel, Hayward; Nancy (Todd) Wagner, Green Bay; two step-children: Becky (Jim) Lemens, Luxemburg; and Nicholas Arendt; six grandchildren: Katelyn, Courtney, Corrine, and Kiara Gersek, Isaac Estel, and Travis Wagner; three step-grandchildren: Dominic, Sydney and Tabitha Lemens; his mother, Lorraine Gersek, Jacksonville, FL; two sisters: Gail Wing, Scottsdale, AZ; Kathy (Roger) Bodkin, Jacksonville, FL; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wallace and Erna Vandenhouten, Green Bay; his in-laws: Penny (Mike) Paque, Wrightstown; Eugene (Ruth) Vandenhouten, Brazil; Debbie (Donald) Delcore, New Franken; David (Judy) Vandenhouten, Casco; and Kevin (Chris) Vandenhouten, Oneida; and the mother of his children, Barbara (Graan) Gersek, Bellevue.
He was preceded in death by a son, Matthew Gersek; and a brother-in-law, Larry Wing.
Friends may call at the Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 E. Mason St., from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday. Parish wake service 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Visitation will continue on Saturday at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 2040 Hillside Ln., after 10:00 a.m. Funeral Mass 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the church with Rev. Mark Vander Steeg officiating.
