Thorval William Franson passed away peacefully on Friday, April 20, 2012, after a long battle with cancer. He was born on March 20 1922, to Martin and Margaret Franson in City Point, Wis. He lived in City Point, Wis., as a child, where his parents operated a grocery store.

After graduation from Pittsville High School in 1940, he entered the CCC Camp (Civilian Conservation Corps). In 1942, he went into the U. S. Coast Guard and was discharged in 1945. While in the Coast Guard he played baseball for the Navy in Mobile, Ala. In 1945, he was a student under the GI Bill at Arcadia, Wis., training for the railroad. He started working for the Green Bay Western Railroad in 1945 as an agent and retired in 1984.
On Oct. 25, 1947, he married his high school sweetheart, Mae Tomsyck. Mae passed away in April 1984. Then in September 1989, he married Patti Doyen.
Thorval volunteered for Lifeline, installing and replacing batteries for a number of years. Also was a Lions Club member, and a member of the American Legion for 60 years and was a dedicated blood donor giving 12 gallons of blood in his lifetime. He loved trains and had a large layout in his basement. Students from Holy Rosary school and child care group would come over to see them for their spring or fall field trip. He also liked hunting deer in City Point, Wis., with his son and grandson and bird hunting in the Kewaunee woods with a special friend. Thorval also loved attending all the Kewaunee football, baseball and basketball games and was a big fan of all three. He loved to play baseball and golf and had a hole in one experience. He downhill skied into his early 80's then changed to cross country at the Dana Farm Park. When the river frozen he would skate it.
He is survived by his wife, Patti; two children, Dale Franson and wife, DeeDee, Kewaunee; Dave Franson and wife, Sally Oshkosh; one sister, Esther Greeley, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; one son-in-law, Darryl Deda; three stepchildren, Gary Doyen, Kewaunee; Lori Brusky and husband, Dave Brusky. Kewaunee; Steven Doyen and wife, Cindy, Rice Lake, Wis.; 12 grandchildren, Ryan Franson, Rachael Franson, Renee (Brett) Paplham, Christopher and Matt Franson, Adam and Zach Doyen, Lindsey and Logan Brusky and Seth, Sarah and Simeon Doyen; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Deda; brothers and sisters, Clatus Franson, Hazel (Geroge) Falck, Glenn Franson and Beulah Harry) Phillips.
Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at Buchanan Funeral Home, Kewaunee. A parish wake service will be held at 7 p.m. and Ameican Legion Services at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continues at the funeral home on Friday, April 27, until 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church, Kewaunee, with Fr. William Swichtenberg officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery.
