Robert F. "Bob" Flegel, 85, Green Bay, passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side Sunday, January 20, 2013, after a year of battling with several illnesses. He was born December 30, 1927, in Luxemburg to Anton and Mabel (Ravet) Flegel. Bob attended St. Mary Catholic Grace School and Luxemburg High School where he enjoyed playing football, basketball and baseball. During his youth, he worked for his mother and father at the Red Owl Grocery Store in Luxemburg.
On June 9, 1951, he married his high school sweetheart, Gertrude Hoida, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pilsen. They enjoyed 61 years of married life. For 54 years, he lived in the same neighborhood and enjoyed family get-togethers and creating many treasured memories. The family also enjoyed camping in Vilas County, "God's Country" and they owned a cabin near Amberg where making firewood was his pride and joy.
Bob retired in December of 1989, from Northern Paper Mill, now Georgia Pacific, after 38 years of service in the maintenance department. He was a longtime active member of St. Bernard Parish. Bob enjoyed coaching Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball and was involved in both Boy and Cub Scouts. After his retirement, he volunteered at Bellin Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Gert; their five children, Cynthia (Ken) Neumeier, Appleton; Richard (Lois) Flegel, Tom (Jan) Flegel, Laurie (Clete) Cayemberg, Steven Flegel, all of Green Bay; eleven grandchildren, Scott Flegel, Brian (Cassandra) Flegel, Bobby Flegel, Amanda (Brian) Kist, Kate (Stephen) Clarke, Emily Neumeier, Nicole (Jason) Fonder, Morgan (friend, Ben Wolfgram) Flegel, Tony (friend, Danielle Strobel) Cayemberg, Anna Cayemberg, Sam Cayemberg; six great-grandchildren. Bob's family was his joy and he truly enjoyed spending his 85th birthday with them this past December.
He is also survived by brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Richard Tatosky, Frank and Lois Hoida, Roger Rueckl; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Mabel Flegel; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Donna and Marvin Bins, Mary Ann Tatosky; a sister-in-law, Joan Rueckl; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Matt and Josephine Hoida.
Friends may call at Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 E. Mason St., from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. There will be a parish wake service at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Friends may also call from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 2040 Hillside Lane. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church with Rev. Mark Vander Steeg officiating. Entombment will be in Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum. A memorial fund has been established.
The Flegel family extends a special thank you to the staffs of Bornemann Nursing Home and Heartland Hospice for their care of Bob and especially to everyone at Angel's Touch who assisted Bob during these past two months.
