Floriano, Leroy N.

Leroy N. Floriano, 95, Crystal Falls, Mich., passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility. He was born on Christmas Day in 1917, in Hermansville, Mich., to the late Emilio and Augusta (Scholtz) Floriano. On June 7, 1941, he married his sweetheart, Genevieve (Sutherland) in Hermansville.

Leroy (Lee) grew up in Hermansville. After graduating from high school, he attended St. Norbert College. As a senior, he received St. Norbert's first "Most Valuable Athlete" award, and in 1988 he was inducted into the St. Norbert Athletic Hall of Fame.

Upon graduation in 1941, he was immediately activated for duty in World War II. From 1941, until 1945 he served overseas as a member of the Ninth Infantry Division. Lee received the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, six Campaign Stars, and was discharged with the rank of Major. Lee then became a teacher in Hermansville, Mich. and then in Coleman, Wis., retiring in 1979. He was an avid sportsman, a gentleman to all and a devoted family man. Lee was also a member of the First Methodist Church.

Survivors include Genevieve: his wife of 72 years; three sons, Bob (Cheryl), Anderson, Mo.; Jim (Kathy), Land O' Lakes, Wis.; and John (Terri), Gaastra, Mich.; two sisters, Lois Adams and Carol (Leonard) Miller, both of South Milwaukee, Wis.; eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, Frederick Dusterhoft, Marion Manning, Eva Burazin and Irene Taschner.

Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. (CST) on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at the Allo Coolman Funeral Home in Spalding, Mich. with Floriano Stecker American Legion Post #340 rites at 10 a.m. A funeral service to celebrate Leroy Floriano's life will be at 11 a.m. (CST) on Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Hermansville with Pastor Chris Bergquist officiating. A luncheon will follow in the Floriano Stecker American Legion Post #340 hall in Hermansville. Burial will take place in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Escanaba.

The family wishes to thank Victorian Heights and Iron County Medical Care Facility for all the attention and wonderful care they gave to their father. It was very much appreciated.
