Benedict, Lloyd Harvey - Greer
Lloyd Harvey Benedict Greer Lloyd Harvey Benedict passed away on July 31, 2015 at his home in Greer. He was 96 years of age. Mr. Benedict was born in Centralia, Washington, and is survived by his wife Dee Workman Benedict, two sons, Lloyd H. Benedict Jr. (Brenda) and William Van Zandt Benedict (Mary Joan), a daughter, Melisa Benedict, and a step-daughter, Eaddy Mays. Surviving also are ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his beloved housekeeper, Sharon Turner, whom he regarded as a second daughter. He was first married to the late Murrell Van Zandt of Sherman, Texas. His parents were pioneer residents of Centralia and are both deceased. Following graduation from Whitman College in Walla Walla Washington in 1941, he entered the US Naval Reserve, from which he was called to active service on December 7, 1941. During World War II, Mr. Benedict served with US Navy Intelligence and saw combat in the Pacific Theater. After discharge with the rank of Lieutenant in 1946, he was employed in the insurance business overseas. He joined Johnson and Higgins in New York, a large, privately-held international insurance brokering firm. He was elected Director in 1972 and given the international business portfolio which he had developed and set the standard at that time as to how US insurance firms could compete successfully in overseas markets. He lived in Brazil, Colombia, Italy, England and Saudi Arabia during his career with extensive overseas travel furthering J&H business. He retired in 1984. Mr. Benedict settled in the San Juan Islands in Washington State for many years until his marriage to Dee Benedict. Upon locating to Greenville, Mr. Benedict became a member of the Piedmont Pipes and Drums and was instrumental in forming the Greenville Scottish Games with his wife. He was a member of St. George the Martyr Anglican Church. Mr. Benedict was a staunch Christian and was buoyed in his last days by support and prayers from numerous believers. Prior to his long illness, he was an avid skier and deep-sea scuba diver, maintaining a schedule of six-week's skiing each year until he was 88. He learned to play the bagpipes in his fifties, considering it a perfect retirement activity. He was devoted to all things Scottish, and his involvement with the Greenville Scottish Games and the Piedmont Pipes and Drums provided the basis for many lasting relationships. Mr. Benedict's strong support of the Republican Party afforded him the opportunity to host Presidential candidates as well as state and national elected officials at his home, which gave him great enjoyment and entertainment. Mr. Benedict was, in all ways, a true member of the Greatest Generation and will be profoundly missed. The family wishes to thank Hilda Sentell Miles, RN, for her tremendous services in helping ease Mr. Benedict's life as he was preparing for his transition. The Benedict family is planning a private memorial service on San Juan Island, where the family plot is located. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to the Anglican Church of St. George the Martyr, 427 Batesville Rd., Simpsonville SC 29681 or the Piedmont Women's Center, PO Box 26866, Greenville SC 29616.
