Hawkins, Richard - Greenville
Richard Alvin Hawkins Greenville Richard Alvin Hawkins, "Alvin" has found his way home to heaven after a yearlong battle with neuroendocrine cancer. Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Douglas and Naomi Hawkins. Alvin was a graduate of Carolina High School where he loved and excelled in high school baseball. He and Barbara shared four years of courtship before marrying and spending 52 years building a marital relationship and friendship that has served as a positive example for their children and grandchildren. Their everlasting friendship and love for each other was evident to everyone around them. Alvin was the proprietor of Best Upholstering and Interiors for forty years where he worked side by side with his son, Rick. He was a believer of hard work, but closed the shop on Friday at noon because the golf course was calling his name. Alvin was a member of Augusta Road Baptist Church for forty years where he and Barbara raised their three children. Alvin served as a deacon, taught RA's, served as Youth Leader to the high school students and attended many youth retreats. He was more recently a member of First Baptist Church, Greenville, and also attended services at Earle Street Baptist Church. Our PopPop was the best. His greatest joy in life came from spending time with his family. He never missed a basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball game, school concert or cheerleading competition. He was a true gentleman. He held our mom's hand, opened her door and said thank you to those who helped him. PopPop loved playing golf, spending time at the beach and traveling. Remaining to celebrate his life on earth are his wife and best friend of 52 years, Barbara Delaney Hawkins; his children, Diane Hawkins Jeter (Scott) of Simpsonville, Richard Alvin Hawkins, Jr. "Rick" (Terri) of Easley, and Karen Hawkins Greene (Bo) of Greenville; his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Caroline, Brooklee, Delaney and Robert; his sisters, Sylvia Fulbright (Paul) of Williamston, Deborah Wingard of Greenville, Jennifer Hawkins of Fayetteville, NC; and a brother, Douglas Hawkins (Diana) of Easley; and his special cousin, Evelyn Holder (Albert) of Greenville.
