Dr. A.O. Simmons
Dr. A.O. Simmons went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 surrounded by his wife, daughter and son.
He was preceded in death by his parents, L.A and Thelma Simmons, and sister, Mildred S. Hamby.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sally Simmons; two children, Cendy Simmons and A.O. Simmons, Jr. and his wife, Wendy. His six grandchildren were the light of his life, Mendy and Maddy Kossuth, Alender III (Alen), Kelly, Robert and Bradley Simmons.
As a pre-med student at Furman he joined the Navy and proudly served his country in World War II
on the USS Consolation. Dr. Simmons graduated from Northern Illinois College of Optometry and practiced Optometry over 50 years in Greenville and Fountain Inn, SC. He was a member of the American Optometric Association for 64 years. Sally worked by his side for over 40 years as they loved and cared for their patients. Doc loved playing golf with the Golden Boys at Pebble Creek and was a Gamecock fan.
A gentle and giving man that loved God, his family and country.
Receiving of friends will be from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. with the service following at 3:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown on Main Street Saturday, May 25, 2013. The graveside service will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Robert Moser, Wofford Green, Rick Beebe, Jack Cloninger, Rick McDowell and Vince DiMaria.
