BJ "Bob" Townes
BJ "Bob" Townes, 81, husband of Addie Ray Townes, died Wednesday, October 9, 2013.
Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late James Harold and Coda Nations Townes.
Bob grew up in Pickens SC and attended Pickens High. He later attended Mars Hill Jr. College and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Economics from Furman University. He later earned Masters Degrees in Banking from The Rutgers School of Banking and the American Banking Institute. Bob's professional career in Greenville was long and distinguished. After graduating from Furman he began working for Peoples National Bank. He later served as Senior Vice President, Peoples National Bank; Executive Vice President and founding member Community Bank; Founder, President, CEO, Piedmont Travel, Inc.; Chairman, Townes Properties, LLC; Chairman, Piedco Associates; and Chairman, Long Beach
Properties. He also helped develop the concept, and implement the first project, in the Revitalization of Downtown Greenville with Peoples Plaza (now Bergamo Plaza) and Peoples Tower (now The Bank of America Tower).
During his career in Greenville Bob believed passionately in giving back to the community that was so good to him. He served as Board Member/Vice President: Greenville Chapter American Red Cross; VP, Board, Greenville Chapter American Cancer Society; Board/Vice President Greenville Cancer Society; Board/Greenville Heart Association; United Way of Greenville County Campaign Chairman 1973; Vice President, Mars Hill College National Alumni Association; Presidents Board of Advisors Mars Hill College; Vice President and Board Furman University Paladin Club, Vice President and Board/ Furman University Alumni Association; Board Chairman Greenville Little Theatre; Advisory Board, Greenville Little Theatre; VP/Board Friends of Springwood Cemetery; Chairman/President Greenville Sertoma Club; Founder/VP Executive Sertoma Club of Greenville. His numerous business awards include; Junior Chamber Of Commerce Of America "Outstanding Young Men Of America"; Sertoma International "Presidents Of Distinction"; Sertoma "Gold Honor Club President"; Sertoma International "Presidents Club Award"; Eastern Airlines "The Leaders Award"; Marquis "Who's Who In America"; Marquis "Who's Who in Business and Industry"; Carolina's Ernst & Young "Entrepreneur Of The Year"; Mars Hill College Fundraiser of The Year. Bob was a member of The Poinsett Club, Greenville Historical Society, Upstate Historical Museum, South Carolina Historical Society, He was also organizer and and Past President of the Greenville Wine Society, past member of Greenville Country Club, Commerce Club, Greenville City Club, The Revelers Club, The Centurian Club, and The Colonial Club.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 57 years, are two sons, John William Townes and wife Kathy, and Robert Scott Townes, all of Greenville; Linda Townes Bond and her husband, Howard, of Greenville; grandchildren, Taylor, Rivers, Hunter, Hudson and Alec Townes. Bob led a full and happy life surrounded by those he loved, whom he showered with much affection.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. at Christ Church Episcopal.
