Eugene Joseph Center


Eugene J. Center passed away June 14, 2013 at the age of 89, surrounded by his loved ones, at his home in Simpsonville, SC. The son of Francis & Frank Center, he was born and raised in Chicago, IL. He was a resident of Palm Beach Gardens, FL from 1986 until 2010, and has been a resident of Simpsonville, SC for the past three years.

He was a proud US Marine and served in the South Pacific during WWII, being awarded the Purple Heart from injuries sustained on both Iwo Jima and Saipan. Upon his return home, he attended trade school, and after working as an electrician several years, served as Building Superintendent for Henry Crown's Material Service Company from 1953 until his retirement in 1986.

He enjoyed all sports, and was a life-long Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. He supported numerous charities, but favored those that assisted wounded and disabled Veterans, but also contributed generously to the Wildlife Foundation and local humane shelters, as he loved all animals.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Antoinette Longley Center, six children, Shirley Poremba (John) of Chicago, IL, Rick Center of San Diego, CA, Robert Center (Marlene) of Temecula, CA, Linda Shuford (Charles) of Simpsonville, SC, Karen Borski (Ken) of Carrollton, TX and Gene Center (Sheila) of El Cajon, CA. He was a loving and caring grandfather of 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. He will be missed dearly by all of us.
