James Edward O'Neal

James Edward O'Neal, age 86, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 13, 2014. Born in Ozark Illinois, he was a son of the late Charles Paul and Mary O'Neal. Jim graduated from the University of Illinois
with a BS degree in Economics and participated in the ROTC program. Upon graduation he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force and served during the Korean war
and was honorably discharged in 1954 as First Lieutenant.
His business career was in the retail sector, working at RH Macy's for over 20 years in the Kansas City area before taking a position with Dillard's in Little Rock, where he retired after seven years. Although Jim's career was in business, his passion was serving the Lord. He loved music and served as the music director at his church, and also as a deacon and a teacher of a men's Bible class. He also loved sports and enjoyed playing golf after his retirement. In 1992 he and his wife Virginia moved to Simpsonville to be closer to family and were active members of Calvary Baptist Church for a number of years. They loved being a part of the music ministry and sang in the choir.
He was a devoted husband for nearly 62 years and is survived by his sweetheart Virginia, his son and daughter-in-law Craig and Karen O'Neal, and his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dan Kirsop. Jim has two brothers; Colonel Ray O'Neal of San Antonio Texas and Dr. Charles O'Neal of Owensboro Kentucky, and a sister, Florence(O'Neal) Slightom of Marion Illinois, eight grand-children and nine great grand-children.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 11:00am at Calvary Baptist Church, Simpsonville, with burial to follow at the M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service from 10:00am-10:45am at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jim's memory to Calvary Baptist Church to the address of; Calvary Baptist Church, 3810 Grandview Drive, Simpsonville, SC 29680.
