John Thomas "JT" Ballard

John Thomas "J.T." Ballard, 87, of Greenville, joined his wife of 64 years, Christine Scott Ballard, in heaven on April 16, 2013.

Son of the late Carl and Edna Stoner Ballard, J.T. served in the US Army during WWII in the 66 Infantry, Black Panther Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star for saving a four-year old child in the midst of a fire fight in the European Theatre.

He retired from GE Gas Turbine and was a member of Cherrydale Place Baptist Church.

J.T. enjoyed working in his vegetable garden and wood workshop.

He is survived by daughter-in-law, Shirley Ballard; grandchildren, Reverend Tim Ballard (Kelly) and Christie Phillips (Sean); great grandchildren, Christian, Brock and Katy Ballard and Alex and Landon Phillips; sister, Shirley Ellison; uncle, Bill Ballard; and treasured nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his only son, Reverend Wayne Ballard; brothers, Carl Ballard, Jr. and Earl Ballard; sister, Margaret Hendrix.

Visitation will be held Friday, April 19, 2013 from 10:45 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest with the funeral service following at 12:00 p.m. in the Northwest Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Pathway Hospice, 581 West Butler Road, Suite B Greenville, SC 29607.

The family wishes to thank Pathway Hospice for the wonderful care and compassion given to J.T., especially Amy Napir, Renee Smith, and Angela Howard.
