John Starks Burgin, 60, passed away Monday, July 2, 2012 after a brief illness. He was surrounded by family during his passing. John was born August 14, in Lexington, KY to Betty and Jack Burgin.

John attended Sayer School in Lexington, KY. He received his B.A. at Transylvania University and his law degree at the University of Kentucky, College of Law. John was also a proud member of the Army Reserves. John was one of the original sixteen attorneys that founded the law firm, Ogletree Deakins, Labor and Employment Law. He received numerous awards and honors during his 36 years practicing law, such as recognition for "Top One Hundred Labor Attorneys in the United States", Chambers USA America's Leading Business Lawyers, The Best Lawyers in America, and North Carolina Super Lawyers.

John had many passions; music, guitars, gardening, but most of all, family.

John was preceded in death by his father, Jack Burgin.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sharon Sue Shelton Burgin, of Raleigh, NC; his son, Christopher John Burgin, and his wife , Laura Workman Burgin, and 11 month old granddaughter, Eloise Austin Burgin, of Greensboro, NC; his mother, Betty Burgin, of Lexington, KY; his sister-in-law, Sonja Shelton Ostendorff, and her husband, E. Allen Ostendorff, and their three children, Natalie, Nick, and Ava, of Raleigh, NC; his brother-in-law, Joey Shelton, and his wife, Ashlee Owen and their two children, Henry and Lucy, of Raleigh, NC.

A celebration of John's life will be held at North Ridge Country Club, Saturday evening July 7, 2012. The family will receive friends at 5:00 pm and a brief memorial will begin at 5:30 pm, after which the family invites friends to join them in an evening of celebration in typical John style.

The family would like to thank the excellent staff at Rex Hospital CICU.

"Johmy" was deeply loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed. Heaven just received "the lawyer from hell"!
