Merle Teague Smith


Merle Teague Smith, 86, 2467 Lisbon Rd. and husband of Wilma Harkins Smith, passed away Monday, December 31, 2012, at the Hospice House of Laurens County in Clinton.

Born in Laurens, he was a son of the late Carl Telford and Myrtle Teague Smith. Mr. Smith was a U.S. Army WW II veteran having served in the Pacific Theater. A Deacon and Sunday School Teacher at Beaverdam Baptist Church, Mr. Smith was a former Chairman of Deacons, led the singing and was very involved in the life of the church. He was a Gideon, a home builder, and farmer.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons: Charles Eugene (Gene) Smith (Marie) of Seneca, Carl Bruce Smith (Sarah) of Greer, Larry Merle Smith of Cross Hill, and Roger Wayne Smith (Trudy) of Laurens; brothers: Maurice Smith (Lucille), Harold Smith (Joan), and Carroll Smith (Iris) all of Mountville; a sister-in-law Ethel Smith of Mountville; grandchildren: Carmen (Candi) Smith Oitker (Monte) of Lenoir, NC, David Smith (Jessica) of Memphis, TN, Mindy Smith Dumont (Jon) of Charleston, Misty Smith (fiancé Todd Gallagher) of Mountville, and Abbie Smith of Laurens; and great grandchildren: Zane Hai Chi and Quinn Guo Hai Oitker, and Tommy, Charlotte, and Matthew Dumont.

He was predeceased by brothers, William (Bill) and Charles Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm, Friday, January 4, 2013, at Beaverdam Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Phil Bryson and Rev. Roger Smith, followed by interment in the church cemetery with Military Honors.

The family will be at the home and will receive friends at The Kennedy Mortuary on Thursday, January 3, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beaverdam Baptist Church Building Fund, 1555 Beaverdam Church Rd., Mountville, SC 29370.
