Dr. Samuel Wayne McCalla, a retired orthopedic surgeon, died Friday, September 6 at age 78 after a prolonged illness. He was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence McCalla. He attended McCallie School for boys in Chattanooga, TN and graduated from Greenville High School and Auburn University. He did graduate work at the University of Georgia, and earned a doctor of medicine degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1963. He served an orthopedic residency in Columbia, SC, and did graduate work at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans. He was certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and conducted an orthopedic practice in Greenville for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Dotty Dobson McCalla and three children, Dorothy Olga McCalla, Austin Michael McCalla and Amber Leigh McCalla.

Surviving are his first wife, Jane McCalla of Greenville and their son Lawrence Edward McCalla of Athens, GA. Also surviving are his brother, Dr. Larry McCalla and his sister, Mrs. Carter Poe, both of Greenville.

The family expresses special thanks to Mrs. Becky Pridmore for her caring attention and

to the personnel at National Health Care on Boiling Springs Road.

Dr. McCalla's funeral service will be held at the Markley Chapel at Christ Episcopal Church Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.
