Timothy Paul Sowles

Greenville

Timothy Paul Sowles, whose simple embrace of prayer and weakness paid profound spiritual dividends around the world, died Wednesday. He was 56. He is survived by his wife, Jane, and two daughters, Hannah and Monica, and son-in-law Jay. Tim was born to Edgar and Thelma Sowles in Flint, Michigan on June 21, 1956. He and Jane were married for 33 incredible years. He worked as a computer analyst for Michelin and IBM. His spiritual family is vast, including a group of young men whom he mentored as current and future leaders in Greenville, SC, across the U.S. and abroad. Tim's passing comes as a final, fitting end to an earthly life that was transformed by an understanding of how human difficulty, though painful, can be the perfect precursor to spiritual strength. Tim viewed his final bout with a rare cancer as the logical loss of his last human "power" culminating with his entrance into an ultimate, permanent strength. His life illustrated the Apostle Paul's words "My strength is made perfect in weakness." He always prayed with his hands uplifted; his words were nothing, he believed, unless the Holy Spirit prompted and completed them. He was an excellent craftsman and used his abilities to help others. He read Watchman Nee, always laughed at "The Blues Brothers" and listened to the obscure sermons of Malcolm Smith until the tapes wore out. Tim's life will be celebrated by the receiving of friends on Saturday, April 13, 2013 from 2-4 pm. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 14, 2013 at 3:00 pm. Both will be held at Grace Church on Pelham Road in Greenville, SC. www.woodlawn-fh.com
