John Warren Obituary

John Steven "Steve" Warren

Greenville

John Steven "Steve" Warren, 63, died on Sunday, September 22, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with glioblastoma. Steve is survived by his wife of 42 years, Geri Zimmerman Warren; his younger son, David Warren; and his older son John Warren and wife Courtney. He also is survived by his older brother Chris Warren of Chattanooga, TN.

Steve was born on July 15, 1950, in Rome, GA to Harry Cove Warren and Mary Walden Warren. He grew up in Rome, GA, where he had a passion for football, and won a state championship for the West Rome Chieftans. He accepted an athletic scholarship to play football at Furman University. While at Furman, he met his future wife Geri in freshman history class. Steve was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity and graduated cum laude in Business Administration in 1972. Steve went on to graduate from University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was a member of the Order of the Wig and Robe.

Steve Warren practiced in the field of labor and employment law representing strictly management of national and international companies for over 35 years. He began his career with Thompson Ogletree Deakins, before opening and building Jackson Lewis LLP's Greenville office. While at Jackson Lewis he was managing partner of the Greenville office for 25 years and a general partner within the firm. In 2008, Steve became a partner with Constangy Brooks and Smith LLP, where he worked until his death. He had a passion for practicing law and was an expert in counseling both union-free and unionized employers with regard to developing and maintaining an issue-free workplace. Additionally, he advised clients with regard to union elections and unfair labor practice charges, negotiated numerous collective bargaining agreements, and handled countless arbitrations over the course of his career. He most enjoyed conducting his seminar entitled, "Staying Union-free in the Workplace," to company executives and HR managers.

Steve was a devoted family man and loved spending time boating and hiking with his family at his lake house. He was a strong supporter of Furman University and was an ardent Furman football fan. Steve was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Prime Time Sunday School Class.

During Steve's battle with glioblastoma, he and his son David developed and launched Take The Fight, a national nonprofit which trains America's best college students and pairs them 1-on-1 with cancer patients to help them fight smarter.

Memorials may be made to Take the Fight at PO Box 2012, Winston Salem, NC 27120 or the Salvation Army at 417 Rutherford St., Greenville, SC 29609.

Visitation will be held in the parlor at First Presbyterian Church in Greenville on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at 12:30 p.m. The memorial service will follow in the main sanctuary at 2:30 p.m.

I have a heavy heart knowing that I won't get to be treated to another of Steve's engaging legal workshops at the CRMA meetings. My thoughts and prayers go to Steve's wife and family for finding comfort and peace in his untimely passing.

I had the great pleasure of hearing Steve at a local HR seminar. His insight and humor so impressed me that I introduced him to my next few employers. He was the best - both as an attorney and a man. My condolences to his family and many friends.

Geri and family, Steve helped the local personnel association many times by speaking at meetings and seminars. He was a very fine gentleman with a dry sense of humor. He will be sorely missed.
May God hold your family in his loving hands during your time of bereavement.

Geri and family - I was Steve's roommate at Furman the year before you were married. We got along so well, and I thoroughly enjoyed our relationship. Among other things, I remember how devotedly he loved you, and I'm sure that love only grew as the years went by. I regret not keeping up with him since our days at Furman, but I always held the greatest respect for him, and the way he lived his life. My deepest sympathy to you and your sons; I know they are fine men, just as their dad was. God bless you all with His peace and comfort.

To the Warren Family,

Through my association with the Chattanooga Regional Manf. Association, I came to know this wonderful man. We conneted on so many levels - his son and I shared USMC stories when we got together --- Steve seemed to "glow" with pride when that occured.

He had the gift of making people feel good when he met them

He will be missed as a professional, a family man and a friend.

Bless you all

To the Warren family:
I am one of Steve's law partners. We at CONSTANGY will miss him very much. I most often saw Steve when we met up in Chattanooga for the CMA breakfast meetings. He was a delight to work with and to be around. May God's grace and strength circle all of you in this time of loss and sorrow.

To the Warren Family: You are such a big part of our lives that we hardly know where to start. Steve and I grew up in Rome, GA and played football against each other at rival high schools. In a real small world story, we moved to Greenville and by coincidence, the Warrens were our next door neighbors. We were neighbors for 9 years and watched John and David grow up with our children, Kelly and Tommy. Steve, Geri, John and David are all dear friends of ours and our deepest sympathy goes out to the family in the loss of Steve. He was a fine man and dear friend.

Dear Mrs. Warren, John & David,
I want to send my deepest condolences to each of you. Your family was such a part of my childhood. So many times John and I would play out in your yard after school and we were greeted by Steve coming home from work. He was always so kind and welcoming. He embodied Christian life, hard work and put his family first. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. God Bless the Warren family. I love you always.
