Richard Prior Obituary

Dr. Richard E. Prior, age 47, died on August 24 from pneumonia. He was an Associate Professor of Classics at Furman University.
He was born in Syracuse, New York, to Edmon Prior and Stella Beaulieu, who survive him. A 1980 graduate of Baldwinsville High School in Baldwinsville, New York, he wrote a senior thesis on the novels of Vladimir Nabokov and became one of the few individuals, then or now, to receive a New York State Regents diploma in four languages.
He attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, graduating in 1985. There, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and received a B.A. in Latin and teacher certification. He received an M.A. from the University of Maryland in 1991, and a Ph.D. from SUNY-Buffalo in 1994, both in classics. In addition to fluency in French, Spanish, German, Italian, Latin, and Greek, he completed studies of Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Sanskrit, and Finnish. His knowledge in several other fields was equally impressive.
He was a brilliant and engaging teacher whose career began in North Carolina and Virginia, where he taught in both junior and senior high schools. In 1986 he established the first Greek class in a public high school in the southeastern United States. He went on to teach hundreds of other students at SUNY-Buffalo, the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, and Furman. His inspiring influence on these students will be felt for decades.
He was the author of five books on learning Latin, including 501 Latin Verbs, a book that almost every student of the language possesses. He was an animated and entertaining commentator who appeared in documentaries broadcast on The History Channel and The National Geographic Channel. A modern-day Indiana Jones, he delighted in taking students on archaeological excavations throughout Italy.
Although raised a Roman Catholic, he eventually became a Buddhist, a decision he made after spending several weeks at a Buddhist monastery in the Mojave Desert. Although a person of strong opinions, he was gentle and compassionate in his interactions with people. He had a quick and sardonic sense of humor that amused everyone. He despised all forms of hypocrisy, bigotry, pretense, and inequality. His wallet was always open to anyone needing help.
He was an iconoclast with voracious interests. He played the French horn, and was a gifted painter and enthusiastic hockey player. Other interests included tropical plants, Asian cooking, Civil War reenactments, winemaking, Sudoku, and woodworking. He loved all animals, especially his border collie, Tarquin, who died recently.
He leaves behind a loving partner of 24 years, Scott Henderson. They fought many battles for themselves and others in their quest to be treated with dignity and equality. They were fortunate to have found many supportive and caring friends in Greenville. They shared an endlessly interesting and fulfilling life together.
In addition to his parents and partner, he is survived by two sisters, Stella Barnello and her husband Bob, and Cathy Bocyck and her husband Bobby; nephews Robby Barnello and Scotty Becker Jr.; great nephew Nicholas Becker; and great niece Arain Becker.
The family expresses enduring appreciation for his loving and skilled caregivers at St. Francis Hospital, and to the students, faculty, chaplain, and administration of Furman for their unhesitating and unceasing support of him and his partner.
In lieu of a funeral, there will be a memorial service at Furman University, date and time to be announced in several weeks.
Donations can be made to the Greenville Humane Society, 328 Furman Hall Road, Greenville, SC 29609.

I knew Richard when we were kids in the sixth grade. Still have the class photo. He was an amazing individual even then. We were the closest of friends in those days. My grandparents lived just down the road from his house. I'll always carry memories of Richard in my heart. I'm sorry for your loss, Scott.

It is so inspiring and awestriking to know that there are people like Dr. Prior right here among us, in God's Creation. Scott, most would not dare dream of being so blessed as to have been given the gift of a life partner like Richard. Fewer still could bear to imagine the heartbreak and devastastion of losing one.
Untold numbers have benefitted, beyond belief, from the fact that Dr. Richard Prior, a rare gem in the human talent pool, was so eager and willing to share his many gifts as freely as he had received them. While having worked tirelessly to cultivate, develop, and polish those gifts. Cerainly, and in no small measure, the love and support of his family, friends, students, associates, strangers, and a life partner like Scott had created, in his world, the loving environment that so inspires one to live his life with such great enthusiasm and generosity of spirit.
May each of the spirits he touched continue to share the gifts that he gave so freely, with still others. Only such a commitment can begin to balance the heaviness of the heart that accompanies such a loss.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of my "dear General". I was a student of his at Furman and was honored to travel with him on a semester abroad. He became a very dear friend to me - such an amazing intellect, a keen wit, and a tender heart. I am mourning his loss alongside you.

I was a student of Dr. Prior’s at SUNY-Buffalo in his last year of teaching there before he left for Furman, and although I wasn’t the strongest student of Latin, I remember him as one of the best and most memorable teachers I had at Buffalo. I appreciated his humor, his intellect, his kindness, and the way he pushed his students to achieve more. I still remember particular helpful comments he made on some of my work in his class, and in fact one of these comments came to mind yesterday as I worked on my PhD exam reading list (I’m getting my PhD in English Composition and Rhetoric, which I hope he would be pleased to know). This recollection led me to look him up online, and I was shocked and saddened to learn of his death. My sympathies go out to his partner, family, and friends.

Dr. Prior, I had hoped to meet you again, since you were one of the greatest inspirations for me when I made the decision to pursue graduate studies in Classics. When you gave me advice, you were kind and honest in equal measures. You taught with ease and joy, and without you I could not have learned Latin so well. Although I cannot ever see you again, I know that you live on for me every time I teach Latin because you're truly my exemplum. I will never forget that the direct object is in the accusative case because you kicked the trash-can across the room. My students will never forget either.

Richard was my best friend. I was pregnant with my first child and he was a youngster when I moved into this town. He baby sat my kids and we used to sit in the kitchen and laugh when half the townspeople thought I was his Mrs. Robinson. He and I were so alone in this tiny berg. Me - hippie, He - gay.

I am sorry for your loss, I just found out. I am Fred Prior's grand-daughter, I was distantly related, communicated through email a long time ago about the family history - again, sorry for your loss.

September 21, 2010

Having just read two chapters of Latin demystied and just read could also read `read just `, I know I am reading a gem of a book by an author generous in his sharing of his wonderfully organised knowledge. I googled Richard`s name to discover his untimely passing. I am saddened but can only guess at the loss felt by those of you closer to him. My heart is with you all and hope time finds a way to lessen your loss. John Kelly (Athlone, Ireland)

To Scott and the Prior family I am so sorry for your loss. I miss my friend Richard. I was so fortunate to see him last month. It doesn't seem possible that he has been gone for a month already. It was wonderful to see him, hug him and laugh with him. It felt like old times. Seeing Richard and some of our mutual friends was the best reunion I could have had. I was ecstatic that we were together again. I'll never forget it. I miss his wit, jokes and amazing mind. The world has lost someone that is truly amazing. My heart goes out to you Scott. It also goes out to the rest of his family. I was looking forward to our next get together.

I'm so thrilled to see all the wonderful things that others have written in tribute to Richard. We have been fortunate to have him in our lives.

Dr. Prior was the most wonderful professor I had at Furman University. I was blessed to work with him for a year. Without his help, I wouldn't have graduated. He was a wonderful man and I cannot express how sorry I am to hear of his death. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

September 3, 2010

I had just bought Richard Prior's 'Latin Demystified' to brush up my own Latin - now nearly 50 years old. It arrived this afternoon, and when I read the Introduction and Acknowledgments I at once wanted to find out more about the author. I was shocked and saddened that someone who gave so much to life should have been cut off from it so soon. I hope that his partner and all his family will be comforted when they think of the many people this outstanding man must have influenced for good. Now, I shall make damn sure I follow his book regularly! Christopher Allen (London)

Richard was my friend as a child and my rock when I ran into hard times over these past few years. He knew me better than I knew myself and although we hadn't laid eyes on each other in many years, I never stopped calling him friend.
I miss you my friend. I will always remember how special you were to me in the little town of Lysander and how you helped shape the person I am today. I know you have finally found the peace you deserve! I love you! God Bless you!

Dr. Prior was my first advisor at Furman and I feel so lucky to have known him. He was my favorite professor, and though I wasn't a Classics major I took 5 classes with him, the last of which was his Spring 2010 Archaeology course. He was one of the kindest, smartest, and funniest people I have ever met and I feel blessed that I had the chance to learn from him. His family has my sincere condolences. Thanks for Rome Dr. Prior.

Simply the best. As a student in his Latin class at Phoebus, I learned English grammar, classical history, and of course Latin from him. What an amazing man. His strength of character lives on in my memory.

August 29, 2010

Hating myself for not contacting him. One of my fondest memories in high school is one of him jumping up onto his desk to shout out to the entire school (Phoebus HS had moveable walls) that I had achieved a 100% on my Latin exam - I believe he was more proud of that moment than my own mother. An endearing person, amazing educator, and as I have read even so much more beyond the time I knew him. My most sincere condolences to Scott and the rest of Richard's family. I never have and never will forget the memories he gave. He will be happy to know I can still conjugate my Latin verbs - thanks to his clever use of melody and song! RIP! Warmest Regards, Melanie (Frazier) - though he called me "wheezer".

I am so saddened to hear of the loss of Mr. Prior. He was a terrific teacher and mentor. I was in that 1st Greek class that he established at Phoebus High School. We only had 7 students. He had a great influence over the lives of all his students. He will be deeply missed.

I never met Richard till reading this obituary that was kindly linked to me by a Friend, one of the guiding lights in my ongoing spiritual transformation. Richard obviously made the lives of everyone who had the pleasure of his acquaintance and company richer than they would have been otherwise. I am grateful to know he lived. I am inspired to continue my journey by awareness of his life as I read this written account of his beautiful mind and spirit. . . . Reta Richardson, Ninety Six, SC

I happened to be visiting Baldwinsville when I heard this news. To Scott, and to the Prior family, I am so sorry for your loss. Richard was one of the most memorable & brilliant people I've ever met, and I feel fortunate to have known him. I was lucky to meet him early, in our hometown, when his gift for languages & his joy in learning them first came to light. He was incredibly motivated, the very definition of a self-starter, pouring over books on his own initiative & pursuing myriad interests. Also, he was funny, a delightful guy to hang out with. His mind was just teeming with ideas, quips, intellectual discoveries. He was the first person who played Patti Smith for me, when everyone else listened to disco -- he was the one who introduced me to Monty Python -- and the TV series "I, Claudius" -- and I forget what else. We both read "Lolita" at the same time. He was also a compassionate person who felt things deeply. I think he helped a lot of us odd & interesting kids get through high school. I feel honored to have seen him when his wings were still developing, and I was not surprised at all when he really took flight. I thought of him often while seeing a character who shared part of his name (Prior) in "Angels in America." I wish I'd gotten up to Baldwinsville to see him a few weeks ago. I think it's going to be one of my life's eternal regrets that I didn't. Why do the good ones go so soon? Richard, my love to you & my lifelong admiration, wherever you have gone to.

Dr. Prior was one of my favorite professors at Furman. He was a warm, caring, and compassionate person that made every effort to get to know each and every one of his students. He was a truly remarkable educator who had the ability to make learning fun through his endless stories and witticisms. It's a tremendous loss for the Furman community and I offer my sincerest condolences to his partner, family, and friends.
