Dr. Barney Clary Austin, Sr., a prominent retired dentist from Lexington, S.C. passed away at his home in Greer, S.C. on August 29, 2012.
A Greenville native, Dr. Austin, 76, was the son of the late Dr. James Monroe Austin, Sr. and Mary Clary Austin. He was a graduate of Greenville High School, Clemson University, and the Emory University School of Dentistry.
An American Veteran, Dr. Austin, served in the US Army and later made his home in Lexington, S.C. where he established his dental practice of 34 years. Dr. Austin was known as a man of integrity, a devoted husband and father, and an avid Clemson fan. He was a member of Lexington Presbyterian Church.
Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Claudette Smith Austin; his children, Cynthia Austin of Norfolk, Virginia, Mary Susan "Bird" Austin of Greer, Barney Austin, Jr. of Lexington, and Amy Austin Mayfield and husband Scott of Greer. Also surviving are his three grandchildren, Sydney, Caleb, and Hannah Grace Mayfield and sister-in-law, Betty Austin.
Dr. Austin was predeceased by his brother, Dr. James M. Austin, Jr.
Visitation will be held 1:30-2:45 p.m. Sunday, September 2, at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home, 211 E. Frederick Street, Gaffney, S.C. with graveside services following at 3:00 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery.
