Daniel Hollis Obituary

Funeral services for Dr. Daniel Walker Hollis, 85, will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens.

Memorials may be made to The University of South Carolina Education Foundation, Hollis History Endowment Gift Processing, 1600 Hampton St. #736, Columbia, SC 29208.

Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Dr. Hollis died Thursday, February 7, 2008. Born March 4, 1922, in Clarendon, Va., he was a son of the late John Porter Hollis and Mary Walker Hollis.

His father was born in 1872 and was an attorney for the Federal income tax division. He received a Ph.D from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. He died of Pleurisy/Pneumonia in 1926. His mother, Mary Walker Hollis, was born in the year of 1886. She was a school teacher.

Daniel Walker Hollis attended Winthrop Training School in Rock Hill, S.C. He later attended USC and graduated in 1942 with an MA in History. Dr. Hollis served in the U.S. Air Force in World War II, including two years in India. He was discharged as a sergeant and subsequently retired as a major. Taking advantage of the GI Bill of Rights, he attended Columbia University in New York, where he received a Ph.D in American History. He began teaching at USC in 1947, where he taught for 37 years before retiring in 1985. He received the Russell award for outstanding research and the Garnet & Black award for effective teaching. He was a life member of the Board of Directors of USC Educational Foundation.

He married Margaret Campbell Belser in 1963, the daughter of Mary Campbell and Duncan Clinch Heyward (Governor of S.C. 1903-1907).

His uncle, Lawrence Peter Hollis, was the superintendent of Parker School District in Greenville, S.C., and was known for the outstanding programs which led Greenville schools to national recognition. He was the most distinguished member of the Hollis family.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Belser Hollis of West Columbia; two sisters, Mrs. Juliette Hollis Moody and Mrs. Alice Hollis Brown; niece, Mrs. Rosemary Moody Roberts (Hal); nephew, Lehman Rowell "Rowe" Moody (Selma Falls Moody), all of Spartanburg, S.C.; and three great-nephews, Lehman "Lee" Rowell Moody, Jr., Bayard Falls Moody and John Taylor Moody.

The family of Dr. Hollis extends their deep appreciation to the staff of Jane Bruce Guignard Nursing Home @ the Episcopal Home @ Still Hopes and his special caregiver, Pamela Nero.
