Dewitt Austin Latimer

Granger, IN

Mr. Dewitt Austin Latimer, 50, passed away Sunday at 2:14pm as a result of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident in Norris, MT.

Dewitt was born in Southern Pines, NC to Austin Charles Latimer and the late Alexia (Broughton) Latimer on June 27, 1962. He received his BS and MS degrees at Clemson University and his PhD at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Mr. Latimer was the Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Montana State University. He had formerly been the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Deputy CIO at the University of Notre Dame. Dewitt was an active leader in his professional communities of EDUCAUSE and Internet2. He served on numerous committees & working groups advancing important initiatives. Dewitt was a highly regarded presenter & author on various technologies and consulted nationally and internationally. He recently joined both the Microsoft Higher Education Advisory Group (HEAG) as well as the NorthWest Academic Computing Consortium (NWACC) and was already making valuable contributions.

Over the years, Dewitt was also actively involved with his family and community. He helped in Boy Scouts, coached Mathcounts and multiple youth sports teams, loved skiing and woodworking, and served on the Covington Shores Neighborhood Association as president.

On December 17, 1988 he married Kim M. Hayden Latimer in Goose Creek, SC. She survives him along with their four children: Kevin, 17, Steven, 16, Katie, 13, and Lauren, 10, all of Granger. Also surviving is his father Austin C. Latimer; a sister, Marian Russell both of Greenville, SC; a sister, Peggy Sarif, of Rosarito Beach, Mexico and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Milton and Joyce Hayden of Granger, IN.

Funeral services to celebrate his life will be Friday May 10, at 10:00am at McGann Hay Funerals | Cremations | Gatherings, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23 enter off Cherry Road, Granger, IN. Friends may call Thursday from 4-8pm and one hour before the service, 9-10am, on Friday all at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka, IN.
