Dorothy Elizabeth McMinn Thompson was born August 10, 1921 in Greer, South Carolina, the youngest child of Jesse Pearl Pollard McMinn and George Edward McMinn. She was the last surviving member of her family. She spent her young years moving with her family as her father worked for various Textile Enterprises in the Carolinas. She graduated from Parker High School in 1939. She attended Anderson College and received her degree from Spartanburg Methodist College. She was employed many years with the Greenville/Pickens Head Start Program as a center director.
In 1948, she married Marion Floyd Thompson. He was the co-owner of Thompson Brothers Roofing Company in Greenville, South Carolina. They were married until his death in 1977. They have two surviving children, Marion Floyd Thompson, Jr. (Chip) and Elizabeth Thompson Carroll (Beth) and their spouses, Sabra Thompson and Roland Carroll. She is also survived by six beloved grandchildren, Elizabeth, James and Ashley Thompson, Spencer, Andrew and Mack Carroll, and one great-grandchild, Mackenzie Cooper.
She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Greenville, South Carolina and an affiliate member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius, North Carolina. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Saturday, August 4, at 2:00 p.m. The family will meet with friends after the service in the church social hall until 3:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1107 S. Main Street, Greenville, SC 29601.
