Ellis Slack, 90, of Greer, husband of Carole Lee Slack, died July 18th at his home.
Ellis was born in Denver and grew up in Long Beach, California. He was a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and received his MBA from Carnegie Mellon.
He was a veteran, having served as a Naval Officer aboard the USS Cabot in the Pacific in World War II.
He is survived by two sons, two daughters, a daughter-in -law and a step-son and their families-Ellis of San Diego, Bruce and Jill of Colorado, Jocelyn of Wyoming, Jennifer of Rhode Island, and Whitney Mack of Connecticut, eight grandchildren, and a sister, Kathleen. He was predeceased by his eldest son Peter.
Ellis learned to play tennis as a boy. Over the years he won, or was a finalist in hundreds of tennis tournaments in California and along the East Coast. In 1969, he was a finalist in senior men's doubles at Wimbledon. That year he and his partner won the United States Lawn Tennis Associations Senior Men's Doubles Championships.
He also enjoyed golf, gardening, good books, and animals.
Ellis was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday July 23rd at 5 pm at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown.
