Gene D. Phillips


Gene Dillard Phillips, 83, of Laurens, passed away October 9, 2013. He was born December 15, 1929 in Woodruff to the late Paul and Lillian Phillips. Gene served more than 40 years in Zimbabwe and southern Africa as a missionary with the Southern Baptist International Mission Board (IMB).

Rev. Phillips graduated from Mars Hill College; his post-graduate degrees are from Furman University and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Gene is survived by his wife of 61 years, Etta Eugenia ("she-Jean"); three sons: Mark (Janice), John, and Paul (Shana); a daughter, Beth Gestring (Wes); and 7 grandchildren: Danny, Robin Richardson (Sean), and April Phillips; Jordan (Alyssa), Bethany, and Michelle Gestring; and Michal Phillips.

Funeral services will be conducted at First Baptist of Camden on October 11 at 2PM. Visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. There will also be a 2PM memorial service on October 12 at the chapel of Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community.
