Helen Elizabeth Ashley Gambrell Wright, 92, formerly of Honea Path, died January 1 at Rainey Hospice House. She was the last surviving child of Josh and May McCurry Ashley of the Saylors Cross Roads community. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by brothers: John Tom and RT Ashley; and sisters: Lena Ashley, Cornelia Mitchell, and Margie Drake. She also survived two husbands: Henry G. Gambrell and Humphrey A. Wright. A 1941 graduate of Erskine, she began a primary school teaching career at 20 that spanned over 35 years. She taught 1st and 2nd grade for many years at Marshall Elementary in Belton across the hall from her sister, Margie Drake. She did graduate studies in education at Clemson. She was a member of Belton First Baptist, the DAR, and was very active until recent years in the UDC. She loved to travel, read, shop, and enjoyed genealogy research, history, and current events.
Mrs. Wright is survived by nephews, Robert Drake (Donna), Wendell Ashley (Wynelle), and Marlee Gambrell (Anne) of Belton, Malcolm (Mac) Mitchell (Missy Wall) and Wilbur Ashley (Gloria) of Columbia, Tom Ashley (Betty) of Orangeburg; and niece, Miriam Mitchell (Phil Moore) of Columbia. She was predeceased by nephews: Henry Drake (Pat) of Simpsonville and Warren and Milo Ashley of Orangeburg. Four great-nieces and 7 great-nephews; and 4 great-great-nieces and 5 great-great-nephews were proud to call her "Aunt Helen," and 2 special stepgreat-granddaughters, Heather Byington Burton and Shannon Byington Hoyt, will always remember their "Granny Helen." She will also be missed by her other family, the Beeks, Pam Beeks Wright, Randy Beeks, Dan Beeks and Diane Beeks McKinney.
Services will be Monday, January 6, at 2p.m. at First Baptist Church Gambrell Chapel with Rev. Dale Lynch officiating. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories. The family will greet visitors prior to the service Monday from 12:45p.m. until 1:45p.m. at the Gambrell Chapel.
The family wishes to thank the staff of North Pointe Assisted Living for their exceptional care and for providing a loving home for Mrs. Wright for over 4 years.
