James E. Dacus


James Earl Dacus, 86, passed away at home on Saturday, July 13, 2013.

Born in Spartanburg County, he was a son of William Doyle and Gladys Holland Dacus, and was the fourth of eleven children.

Jim grew up in Greer and graduated from Greer High School, Class of 1944, and attended Limestone College and Georgia Tech University.

He proudly served his country in WWII in the United States Navy, aboard the USS Ranger, CV4. He was privileged to participate in the 2011 Greenville Honor Flight to the World War II Memorial in Washington DC.

Jim and Martha Ann Watkins were married on June 20, 1953 and recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. He was the proud father of two daughters, Laura and Susan. He was a long-time employee of the Britt-Clary Company. A 50 year member of Overbrook Baptist Church, he enjoyed singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School and serving as a Deacon. He was a member of American Legion Post # 3 and United Commercial Travelers # 444. Jim was an avid gardener and also enjoyed cheering for his favorite team, the Clemson Tigers. He was known for his gentle spirit, his love of music and his beautiful smile.

He is survived by his wife Martha Ann; his daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Robert H. Wootten and Susan and G. Scott Kilgore; his four grandchildren, Richard and Catherine Wootten and Geoffrey and Ellen Kilgore; and by his brothers Edwin, Gene, Norman and Neal Dacus. He was predeceased by his sisters Lois Elmore, Ruth Babb, and brothers, Bill, Marvin, Warren and John Dacus.

A memorial service will be Tuesday, July 16 at 2:00 pm at Overbrook Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. James Thomason officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Overbrook Baptist Church Music Fund or to the .
