John William "J.W." Hughes, 89, of Greenville, husband of Gladys Mote Hughes for 69 years, died December 3, 2013.
Born in Honea Path, he was a son of the late John Wesley and Mary Dyer Hughes.
Mr. Hughes served in the U.S. Air Force in the Pacific Theater during World War II and he also served in the Korean War.
John retired from Platt Saco-Lowell after 33 years of service and retired from Custom Machine Works after 17 years of service.
He was a member of Tremont Church of God.
In addition to his wife, Gladys, he is survived by two daughters, Carol Slack (Duane), and Alisa Bridger; a son, Mike Hughes; three sisters, Barbara Taylor, Doris Landreth, and Sue Coggins; six grandchildren, Kevin Hughes (Rebecca), Anna Slack Chamberlin (Adam), Josh Slack (Anna), and Craven, Hannah, and Grace Bridger; and two great grandchildren, Jake and Maggie Hughes.
John was predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Francis Hughes, and a sister, Patricia Hughes.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at Tremont Church of God, with visitation prior to the service from 1:30 - 2:45 p.m.
Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery, West.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tremont Church of God, Building Fund, 2854 New Easley Highway, Greenville, SC 29611.
