Reverend Dr. Lewis Edgar Greene, age 74, past President of The South Carolina Baptist Convention, died Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Bethea Baptist Retirement Community in Darlington, SC.

Born in Charleston, WV, he was the son of the late Corbett H. Greene and the late Lola Williams Greene. He graduated from Trinity College in Clearwater, FL, Piedmont Bible College in Winston Salem, NC and Luther Rice Seminary in Jacksonville, FL. He was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Trinity College. His pastorates include, Crossroads Baptist Church in Ruby, SC, Bethune Baptist Church in Bethune, SC, Orrville Baptist Church in Anderson, SC, Washington Avenue Baptist Church in Greenville, SC and New Prospect Baptist Church, Anderson, SC, where he retired in 2003. Reverend Greene was the former Moderator of the Saluda Baptist Association in Anderson County and was most recently a member of First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach, SC.

He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Stewart Greene of Surfside Beach, SC; a daughter, Kristie Greene Lee and her husband, John E. Lee, of Florence, SC; a granddaughter, Anna-Davis Lee; a brother, Rev. Dr. Dwight Greene and his wife Margaret, of Anderson, SC; and a sister, Marilyn Greene Boston and her husband Kay A. Boston, of Torrington, WY.

The Funeral service will be held on Monday, July 1, 2013 at 3:00 PM at New Prospect Baptist Church, 2503 Whitehall Road, Anderson, SC 29625. Rev. Bob Marcaurelle and Rev. Dr. Dwight Greene will officiate. The Committal service will be held at Hopewell Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Huntersville, NC, on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at noon.

The family will receive friends at New Prospect Baptist Church, prior to the service on Monday from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Connie Maxwell Children's Home, 810 Maxwell Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646; or to the Bethea Retirement Center, c/o Aquatic Fund, 157 Home Avenue, Darlington, SC 29532.
